Hello to all, well I just bought a 1996 Chevy C3500 diesel. I've never had a diesel engine and am now worried. It was running great when I bought it. I put a sneeker lift on it to tow cars with. All of a sudden while I'm driving it cuts off. So I shut if off and it turned back on without any problems driving it again and it shut off again. I took it to a mechanic and he changed my filter and said it had water in the lines from poor quality diesel. So it ran fine for a day and now its doing it again. Shuts off all of a sudden when I start to slow down. Im assuming its my fuel pump or something. Has anybody ever had this problem and what did u do to remedy it. Any suggestions or comments you have are really really appreciated.

Thanks in advance

do a search on this forum for pmd (pump mounted driver) and/or fsd (fuel solenoid driver) and see how to pinpoint and remedy problems associated with this common problem. oh yeah the pmd and fsd are the same thing.

Hi, and thanks. Yes I did nothing but search and search and I found the same thing. I noticed it happens frequently and most people move it and put a cooler on it. I did find some good deals on Ebay.com and am going to buy a cooler for it too.

Thanks for your help!

You might make sure that you do not have a big water slug in fuel tank either

Check for fuel pressure while it's running. Turn the filter bleed and it should squirt fuel not die.

For goodness sake.... DO NOT RUN OUT AND BUY A NEW PMD AND COOLER! You migh be spending hundreds of bucks and not fixing the problem.

First do a little diagnosing. Do what QM said and open the filter petcock (located next to the thermostat housing, on the coolant cross-over pipe, right in the front top center of engine) while the engine is running and see if it dies or keeps running. Then post back here.
