What temp should the allions be at when outside temp is about 95 degrees and truck unloaded?

I would think 180-210 on an '05 with factory cooler and stock trans.

Thanks for the information. My temp was around 160 degrees. I was curious because after installing my 4" exhaust it ran a little closer to the trans cooler lines and was not sure if it was affecting the trans temp.

That's very rassuring..:) I was concerned when I saw 170 pulling a trailer 2000 miles round trip, because I have'nt seen above 150 since I got it in October. I also noticed while pulling in tow/haul the temp seems to be a little lower, even when on highway.

Some '05s run very hot and some don't. I myself like an operating temp between 160 and 180. 200F does not scare me and the Alli can handle that well especially with synthetics but I don't like temps that high.

Keeping under 200 is ideal, but 175 is great!

During Easter break, I was seeing 160 -180 towing ~9,000 across Arizona to Sedona. I was fairly warm outside. I did not see too much change when pulling grades. I'm pretty sure I did not see any much over 180.

I run Amsoil syn.

Last summer, we went to the Sequia's and I did not see anything south of 200 and when I pulled the sierra grade I saw 240+ and pulled over. Scared the S*&t out of me. Baby'd it the rest of the vacation when I was pulling the rig. Was greated in So. Cal. (LA and OC) with 114+ outside temps.

Thus, the change to Syn. and i have been very happy since.

Last August, the tranny temperature went as high as 95*C (about 200*F) while pulling our 10000 lb 5vr in 100 degree weather. Most of the time it ran at about 80*C. (about 175*F)

Just took a trip to New Mexico from Tucson and noticed Engine temp 194 tranny temp anywhere from 30-40 degrees below depending on grade got close to 170 but mostly in the 160's 100 degrees in the desert. Around town I get in the 190 at times.

This weekend I was at 16K lbs total (5'er and truck) . When going thru the towns and stop lights I was creeping up to 200. It was near 90 degrees and really humid with the A/C on. The fan on the LBZ actually came on and I thought it was due to the Trans Temp since for a minute that was hotter then the engine. Engine never got to 210. Back out on the highway I went down to 190 to 185. I have noticed that the temp is very dependant on the Ambient Temp. Yesterday on the same roads I never made it over 175 with cloud cover and the same load.

My tranny with the SCIII last summer running through Arizona, Nevada and Cali in 100* plus heat ran about 210-217*. I ran like that for over 6000 miles without one bad tranny shift. When I got home I replaced the spin on filter and cut it open to find out I just wasted 9 bucks. Filter was clean as new and the Citgo Qutrasyn looked like new. I bought the Mike L tranny cooler:D and will be gone again this summer to see how well it does compared to the factory one.

Hey Bulldogger,

I'd like to know what the Mike L tranny cooler consists of. My truck is running great but the Allison is overheating in the desert and it's not great when running in town with the AC on. So far I have installed the Mag-Tech tranny pan. Right now, my truck is in the shop and I am in the process of swapping the stock radiator with an electrically ventilated one to see if that helps.

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

GuidoAmm,
The Mike L cooler is larger and better built then the factory. It consists of the new cooler and two bolts and lock nuts to hold it in place. The one trip I took to Murtle Beach SC with it appears to lower tranny temps by about 30*. It was 85* in SC with trailer in stop and go traffic tranny sat at 150*. Normally with the SCIII I see 185-190*. It takes about 10-15 minutes to install, using factory lines in stock locations:D It is a top quality piece.

Ok, thanks for the quick reply.

I'll try the radiator I'm putting on now and see if that makes a difference. Eventually, I might get in touch with Mike L
