: Trailer harnessing
donmiller714 10-06-2004, 08:05 AM Find that the battery on my TT isn't charging when connected to the truck but charges when the TT is connected to the genny. So I went looking for a description of the trailer harness in the heims (sp) manuals but couldn't find any. I thought I'd check to make sure there wasn't a fuse or something I needed to check. Come to think of it, I didn't see anything on the connection block for the trailer brake under the dash either. I was checking vol. 2. Anyone know where this information is?
thanks!
4x4man 10-06-2004, 08:22 AM There is a 40 amp fuse that you need to add in the fuse box under the hood in the STUD 1 location. There is an orange plug that is in that spot that you need to remove.

As 4x4Man said, stud #1 is for the charging circuit, stud #2 is for the trailer brake power supply. There is a connection for the trailer brake under your dash on the left side of the steering column. Pull the black cover off and you'll see several connection points. The one you want is top row, second from your left as you look at the panel.
Don't worry about getting the wrong one, if you've got the GM plug for the trailer brake controller, or an aftermarket harness like you can get for the Prodigy, it will only fit in the right hole due to slight differences in the plug design and pin placements in the plug...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif
donmiller714 10-06-2004, 10:25 AM Roight! I'll check those out this afternoon. Any clue where these are documented in the SI?

I'm guessing that you already have your trailer brake plugged in. But a warning to others. The 2003 and later trailer brake jumper is different from the 2002 and earlier. There is one wire switched in the harness. If you use an unmodified harness for an earlier model year in a 2003 or later, turning on your running lights (dash lights) will energize your trailer brakes. The modification to a pre-2003 harness is easy if you need to do it. If in doubt about whether of not you have the correct harness, just turn your running lights on after you get the brake controller installed and see if there is power energized to the brake controller (usually there is a light that shows if it is energized on the face of the unit). If there is power there with the running lights on, then the wires in the harness are wrong.
Don,
I can't tell you where that's at in the SI, I got part of it from here and part from the GM Upfitter's site in the Wiring diagrams section.
Larson,
Yeah I should have maybe mentioned that, but since he's got an '03 and the directions for the differences in the harness comes with the aftermarket Prodigy harness, I guess I just figured he'd be okay. My bad...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif
DOGBOY 10-06-2004, 02:41 PM ok guys where do u get this fuse for stud 1?
dogboy
skoryaro2 10-06-2004, 02:50 PM If you have the factory OEM electric brake control harness it will be
taped to the harness usually under black electrical tape. In my
case the harness was in the glove box. The fuse was taped in the
middle of the harness so I couldn't see it until I took the tape off.
Not knowing what year your truck is........If you can't find the spare
fuse, just go get yourself a 40amp fuse (identical type to what is used
in your fuse box).
4x4man 10-06-2004, 05:03 PM Dogboy:
You can get the fuse at Napa, 40amp fuse part number is 782-1118.

donmiller714 10-07-2004, 08:01 AM for clarification, the only issue I'm having is the charging on the TT battery -- the brakes, lights, etc on the TT work fine. I'm trying to isolate which lead charges the battery so I can verify there's voltage there--if there is I can put the burdon back onto the TT dealer to fix the TT charging system.
What's the link to the GM Upfitter's site?
Well since you asked about the brake connection, that's why I was talking about it, I didn't realize you were just looking for it in the manuals...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif
Here's a link to the wiring PDF from the GM Upfitter's site. It's a pretty good sized file so if you don't have a high speed Internet connection, it will take a bit to download it.

Look at the hinged cover on your 7 pin connection at the rear of the
truck. There's a diagram on it of all 7 pins and their
function. Find the "always hot" pin which is marked as a
"+" and should be at the 2 o'clock postion while looking at the
connector. Test it with the grounding pin which is marked as "-"
and should be in the 7 o'clock position. If you have voltage
there, than it is a TT issue. If no voltage, start with the fuse.
Hope this helps!
vegasdude 10-07-2004, 11:26 AM I have an 04 and in stud one I have a 30 amp. That is also what shows on the diagram under the fuse cover as well..............Edited by: vegasdude

Noice! I'll check that first!
skoryaro2 10-08-2004, 11:14 AM Donmiller714,
How'd you make out???
donmiller714 10-09-2004, 12:46 PM Bad fuse at stud 1. Will replace. Thanks!
Dmax Tim 10-10-2004, 06:11 AM Bad fuse at stud 1. Will replace. Thanks!
That's a 40amp fuse so u may want to do some checking for shorts before replacing.
ccmax 10-11-2004, 10:47 AM The plug on my 05 has a label attached that says if you have the dual
battery option to not use the fuse at stud 1 ???? And yes the
wires are different than my previous 2000 harness, just always
following the label on the harness.

I had the same confusion. I think they mean the dual
battery option used for trailering available with the gasser
motors......not our dual battery option on the diesels (used for
starting). I had to put the fuse in stud#1 to make things work.
ccmax 10-11-2004, 03:55 PM I didn't put a meter on that pin on the plug yet so that's good info,
was wondering why a second battery would have anything to do with that
unless it's rewired under the fuse box for a different purpose.
