: killer dog hair! -- RESOLVED!
donmiller714 10-06-2004, 07:58 AM I'm sure many of us have dogs. I'm sure there's lots of dog hair. However I'll be that no one has dog hair underneath the lens of their instrument panel!

You can see the offending hair laying along the left bottom of the speedo (there's actually more hair in there now--this pic was taken a few weeks ago).

The offending dog, no doubt plotting her next indescretion of my truck!
Ok, so now that I'm completely fixated on the dash, I am also noticing dust forming on the small ridges in many of the gauge holes, in addition to more dog hair. I took the front trim off the dash to try to get rid of the hair and find that the plastic lens over the IP is incorporated and apparently not removable.
So the question is, anyone else have this problem and has anyone been able to clean it out?
thanks!Edited by: donmiller714
silvermax 10-06-2004, 08:22 AM You might be able to get a can of air with the little tube used toclean electronics and spray it in the and see if that works,if not you can remove the gauge cluster and the plastic face snaps off with little tabs thats on the back of the cluster.
Great lookin pup.Edited by: silvermax
habanero 10-06-2004, 08:57 AM Wow, I have dog hair almost every where else in my truck, but I haven't seen any in the gauges. Now I am going to have to look more closely. Luckily my dog is black so it may not show up as easily.
gsxr1216 10-06-2004, 09:40 AM my truck is a rolling fur machine... if the windows havent been down for a few weeks and you open them going about 60 mph fur goes flying everywhere!!!! My poor german sheperd is still blowing her coat out after this crappy summer!!! the best truck i ever had was one with all rubber floors, simply open all the doors and fire up the leaf blower, instant clean truck!!!
skoryaro2 10-06-2004, 09:45 AM Have a similar problem....but it's not DOG hair that I'm contending withhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

blnagel 10-06-2004, 09:46 AM My lab sheds something fierce. I still have not noticed any of her hair inside the guage face. That is one smart dog of yours to get that task accomplished.

gslam88 10-06-2004, 10:02 AM Don,
I don't have the problem of dog hair in my truck. One of my kids is just way to big for my truck. He is a long haired St Bernard. At 180 lbs it's not easy getting him in and out of my truck. However since he spends most of his time in the house that is where we had the problem. We use to get tumble weeds rolling thru the house from him. We reduced that problem by about 85 to 90% or more by simply shaving him a lot shorter. It makes a ton of difference, I don't know if you want to do that, but it might help a lot

donmiller714 10-06-2004, 10:23 AM Thanks all! I didn't know the face of the IP snapped of -- that's what I'll do next (though I was trying to avoid removing it).

I'm with you on this one! I like dogs and all, but my truck is not for dogs.
Mackin 10-06-2004, 12:47 PM It comes apart very easily.
See MY pics.Remove outer dash bezel remove 4 7mm screws . Pull out gentely to unplug IC.
The clear plastic is just snapped in place ,you'll see. Make sure that the IC is warm to avoid cracks.

Amen to that one leave him at home in the yard to protect your house. My wife works at the local dealer they had a guy with a pitbull waiting for service on his truck. Another guy was waiting in the waiting room also and the dog attacked the guy requireing stitches to his face. Wouldn't of happen if he would have just left the dog home.
Fingers 10-06-2004, 04:22 PM My dog has guarded the truck for years. Goes with me most everywhere
too. Guess I just don't see the problem with sweeping out the
truck once in a while. No hair in the IP ..... yet.
RanaExcavating1 10-06-2004, 05:00 PM I bet if that dog could talk it would be telling a different story!
I heard gets pretty lonely in the desert!
Fingers 10-06-2004, 05:10 PM once you get used to the heavy fur on the legs......
Black Dog 10-06-2004, 06:12 PM My dog is always welcome in my truck and he spends A LOT of time there while I am working. I don't have a problem with the gauge panel, but the velour cloth that they use on these seats is a magnet for dog hair, and it is a bitch to even vacuum it off. I wish it had vinyl seats like my '70 Blazer.
mannytranny 10-06-2004, 06:53 PM Ill tell you what.....Dogs just love to ride in the bed of the truck.
Something to do with the wind.
Ive got you beat, when I tinted the front windows of the truck, I got a
piece of dog hair in the corner. It dosent bug me one bit.
Lightning 10-06-2004, 08:16 PM My dog stays home all day, and on the weekend he's with me in the truck. I fold down the rear seat and leave his dog bed in there at tall times. He loves riding in the truck. He does shed, but it's not all over the truck. Most dogs need to be brushed once a week, I do this and it keep the hair amount down to a minimum.

I use a damp sponge to pull the hairs that the vacuum does not get off
the cloth. Works great. The black interior on the previous truck
was extra magnetic to the dog fur.
DavesDmax 10-07-2004, 03:55 AM My dog always rides in the back seat. He goes nuts when I ask him if he wants to go for a ride. He's always the first one standing by the rear door waiting to get in. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
As the commercial goes, it's really his truck, he just lets me drive and work on it. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
With leather hair on the seats isn't a problem, hair on the carpet is. None in the instrument cluster.

donmiller714 10-10-2004, 05:07 PM Well, I pulled apart the dash and pulled the instrument cluster today.
First, I couldn't figure out how to pull the harnes plug off. There's what looks like a top tab and a bottom tab, both different colors. The top tab is a locking tab that snaps into a slot at the top of the instrument cluster. The bottom tab seems to be just to get a good grip on the plug. Once I figured that out I pulled the plug and DROPPED THE ENTIRE CLUSTER OUT THE DOOR ONTO THE STREET! I broke the fall just a bit with my foot, but it still bounced around on the pavement a bit. F#*k!
It's a 3-piece assembly clipped together like a sandwich. I'd intended to pull the front part off only so I could get at the hair, but as it turned out I had to take the back off first, then the front popped off pretty easily.
The back PC board (solder side) had a nice big clump of doggie hair. I blew that off, and then of course I got to the front and blew out the other hairs. Here's some pics of the disassembled unit.

Here's the instrument cluster sans the front lens.
no big -- probably have to do this once a year or so...
thanks for everyone's help! (now on to the next project!)
Tomslick24 10-11-2004, 04:45 AM My dog lets me drive his truck. He's a wolf husky mix and probably a few others breedshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gifAnyway he doesn't or hasn't figured out yet thats he's a dog,so he rides in the truck.Cleaning is a minor factor for his wolf bark and excellent crack head thieve deterrent.

What he said!
chuntag95 10-11-2004, 01:26 PM I don't see how a dog is that much of a problem. Mine rides in-between the two kids and we just put a towel over the seat. Now those TWO KIDS make a mess.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif Haven't caught the dog with gum or candy once!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif Even with seat protector and 3/4" plywood under their seats, I still find all kinds of junk and grung. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/throw up.gif And there is a law that says we can't chain them in the back of the truck.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
