: What do I have to do to haul RV campers?
Maniac373 05-19-2007, 06:26 PM Hello-- I am new to the forum..
I am going to be purchasing a 2007 GMC Sierra 3500 dually , this coming July..
I am located in north central Indiana, about 2 hours from Elkhart (where most of the RV campers are made)..
I want to pull RV campers on the weekends (log book), and do my regular job during the week (hourly P&D driver-- no log needed if you work under 11 hours a day)
I have a class A CDL license, and have 5+ years of driving combination vehicles.
What do I need to do next? I heard of something called an "ICC #" that will get you tax-exempt fuel in the state of Indiana.. (.15 -.20 cents cheaper a gallon?)
I have looked at horizon transport's website.. I was just wondering if anyone is doing anything similar to this with their trucks.. Hopefully I can find out if this would be something worth doing..
Thanks in advance..
Charles
klutchdust 05-19-2007, 06:37 PM If you do a search of this site you should find all the information you need.
From what i have read the insurance costs and fees involved won't make it feasible to do on a part time basis. Like my wife says all the time 'but what do you know' Anyway, good luck and enjoy your new truck.
icepick96 05-19-2007, 06:44 PM I was looking into hauling RVs a couple of months back. I don't have much to add but I do know most of the transport companies require a truck with a regular bed or a long bed. You might be able to get away with a short bed if you buy a 5th wheel that slides.
Maniac373 05-19-2007, 07:19 PM I was planning on going with the 8' bed anyway..
I am going to use the truck to haul a 24' enclosed trailer, that is used to haul a race car and weekend race gear.. It's not like the truck would be a 'wasted' 50 grand..
Does anyone know anyone who hauls RVs, as an owner operator?
OldSoldier 05-19-2007, 07:24 PM You have the perfect truck for it.
Maniac373 05-19-2007, 08:41 PM O man old soldier!! that truck is sweeeet!

You will have to log all your hours worked when hauling outside a 100 air mile radius. I'm not sure if you can log your hours worked at your other job as on-duty not driving or on duty driving, but you will have to log them.
You will also need about 1 million in liability and probably 100k in cargo insurance which will run you together about 500-700 a month (if you're lucky). If you run one trip 700 miles one way at say 1.20 a mile, you will average .60 cents a mile roundtrip unless you get backloaded. If you average say 9 mpg loaded and 17 unloaded, for a total average of 13 with fuel at say 2.60, you cost of fuel per mile will be .20 for a profit of .40 cents a mile. 1400 miles roundtrip * .40 = $560. Do that every weekend and you will make 2240 a month before insurance. Do the math and if it's worth it for you, go for it.
thejdman04 05-20-2007, 09:25 AM I agree, w/everything said. W/fuel the awy it is, all the apperowrk accounting, uncle same taking his cut of everyth8nig you make etc etc for the time your gonna spend, might as well be w/your wife or another job. Its hard to makea living on the road full time let alone part time, esp w/insurance and fuel.
FireMedicJO 05-20-2007, 09:44 AM Haulin-RV pulls for classic transport, you might check with them. Also there is Quality Drive Away, Starr Fleet.
I pulled a little last summer, but Haulin pulls full time and he might be able to give you some insight on some of the better companies.
Maniac373 05-27-2007, 01:19 AM what did you say this guys screen name is?
I would really like to get in touch with someone who has done this (or is currently doing this)--- just to get some insight...
pros:
I'll be able to make the truck payment with my monthly salary
cons:
fuel costs
insurance costs
please fill in what you think under pros and cons..

Maniac 373 check Haulin-RV. He transports RV's full time and seems to do great. Just to get an idea of how much he drives. He put 250,000k miles in 1 YEAR on his 3500 2006 LBZ Dually!
Dieseldad97 05-27-2007, 01:55 AM Hey Maniac, my father-in-law pulls campers for a living. It's part of his retirement suppliment income. He lives in Canada, but travels up to Indiana to pick up the trailers. He makes money doing it, but he has to stay dedicated to the job.
His insurance is like $800/ month, plus truck payment, plus fuel, plus hotels...get the picture?
Good luck with the new truck.:)
