: Yikes! My new Edge almost got me!
Mr. D 05-19-2007, 12:41 AM I got the Edge w/Attitude on my '06 LBZ and the straight though muffler on my truck today! Of course I had to try out the levels to see what they would do! the extra power and torque didn't seem as dramatic as I expected when I ran through each level WOT until I stopped and looked at the truck. My Snug Top camper shell had shifted 2 1/2 inches to the rear! Whoops! Maybe there really is more torque!! Yikes! Diesels are so deceiving about speed and power! Very little fuss, but you are at 60 MPH in a flash! The Snug Top is tightened down a little more now! The alarm kept coming on and I though the Ally was slipping, but then I found out the speed alarm was set at 70! Whew!
So I'm learning about the Edge w/ Attitude! I think I like level three the best! It seems just as fast and smoother 0 to 60.
By the way does anyone know the circumference of the stock 245 x75R tires on a 2500 HD?
Any tips, warnings, advice would be welcome for a newbie with an Edge! My tip is tighten down your camper shell before you go WOT!
03LB-7dmax 05-19-2007, 12:59 AM carful at higher levels,as this will 'Limp" your tranny,IE... slipping the clutches.
malibu795 05-19-2007, 01:25 AM 245/75r16 ar 30.7" tall
dont tow on lvl 3 use lesser lvls
Mr. D 05-19-2007, 03:02 AM 245/75r16 ar 30.7" tall
Thanx, but I was asking for the circumference not height to enter into the Edge. I think it may be 95.7"! Correct???
dont tow on lvl 3 use lesser lvls
I understand! I'll probably tow on stock or Level 1 because the LBZ has more than enough power to tow my 23' travel trailer at stock. I think mileage will be the deciding issue.
It seems that Level 3 is just as fast up to 50 MPH as the higher levels, but the higher levels keep pulling stronger after 50 MPH. Am I right, or imagining things again??
The highest EGT I got after a few WOT runs was 850 degrees. Is that about what is expected and safe?
Opinions?
Jim Downard 05-19-2007, 09:52 AM Circumference is diameter times Pi. Measure the height of your tires (try not to measure a loaded tire height from the ground as this will give you an error in your calculations, try taking one off the truck to unload it then measure height) then multiply it by 3.14. Or your tires are 245/75-16's ssooooo, 245mm width x 75% for profile height divided by 25.2 (mm per inch) added twice for tire above and below rim plus the rim added together times pi.
Or 245 x .75 = 183.75 / 25.2 = 7.29 in. x 2 = 14.58 + 16 = 30.58 x 3.14 =96.02 inches or 8 ft circumference.
CRASHNBURN 05-19-2007, 10:29 AM Best mileage will be either level 2 with a boost of 5 or level 3 with a boost of 3. I tow in level 2 with a boost of 3. I might try a boost of 5 this year. I run level 6 only for smoking. Either do it in the very low gears or in 6 gear. I get going 65 & roll into it. There will be smoke. Just make sure you do not down shift.

Crashnburn,
By boost 5 you mean how much throttle you are giving it, correct? You are not talking about any Edge boost 5 setting that can be input into the attitude monitor, right?
I assume the tow setting varies as to weight/resistance you are towing. I'm only towing a 23' TT at about 6K lbs. The stock LBZ tows it easily up soft grades in 6th gear in cruise. I never use Tow/Haul unless I'm going downhill in a steep grade. On level ground it's hard to remember the trailer is there until I check my fuel mileage. Power is not an issue even at stock LBZ settings. A little better towing mileage would be nice! :D:
TheGrouch 05-19-2007, 08:50 PM Each power level has a 1 through 5 selectable setting for how much fuel is added during low boost. Read the manual to find out how to change these settings.
CRASHNBURN 05-19-2007, 10:12 PM Yep read the manual & set up a setting for all your 1-5 or 1-6 if you have hot. I run a boost of 5 on all, but level 3. I run boost of 3 on that one. This is per on the main Engineer at Edge for mileage & smoke.

Good to know! I did read the manual, but it takes a while to digest for a newbie! The low boost and defueling requires some new learning! I think I understand the rest, MAYBE! I'm a small block Chevy man trying to understand diesels. I'll get there! So far I like levels 2 and 3. The Edge is not dramatic like building a high H.P. small bloack Chevy. It doesn't seem to be doing that much until you look at the difference in elapsed time from 0 to 80 from stock! If feels more like a heavy, big block muscle car. That is, not a lot of noise and fuss, just a smooth rush to 80 MPH in two bats of an eye. THANX TO ALL FOR THE ADVICE!
CRASHNBURN 05-20-2007, 01:20 PM Maybe put defuel on all shifts for normal driving unless you are racing. I like to set the defuel on the 5/6 shifts. Safer for the tranny. I am replied bact to you email.

Peformance tests were:
0-60 Level 3 - Boost 3 = 6.6 Sec
0-60 Level 5 - Boost 5 = 6.6 Sec
1/4 Mile - Level 5 - Boost 5 = 95 MPH in 15.2 Seconds
Not to bad for a 4 ton White Whale carrying a 200 lb ex-school teacher and a camper shell!
No gliches at all so far! Crossing my fangers and tippy toes!
I wonder what stock Corvettes do in the 1/4 Mile? I understand they don't do well with 5th Wheels? :D:
CRASHNBURN 05-20-2007, 10:31 PM Take defuel off for a couple of runs. It should be faster. :)
Mr. D 05-22-2007, 12:30 AM Take defuel off for a couple of runs. It should be faster. :)
You were right as usual! I took it off defuel and it dropped down to 0 to 60 in 6 seconds flat! I'll settle for that! What is nice is that level 3 with a boost of 3 was just as fast as level 5 with a boost of 5! Level 5 was faster after the 60 MPH mark. My real concern is 0 to 60 elapsed time rather than top end speed! Life is to short!
CRASHNBURN 05-22-2007, 12:48 PM Glad to year you are happy with it. Have a good one.
Mr. D 05-23-2007, 05:27 AM Crashnburn,
Does the speed limiter (duh!) limit the speed performance (duh!) test for the 1/4 mile? :iamwithst
95 MPH in 14.6 seconds seem to be a sticking point! It seems to be running too strong at 85 to not be running faster than 95! Is defueling at work here?? It's running so fast at 85, you'd expect around 100 MPH at the 1/4 mile?
What have Edged LBZ's been running in the quarter mile without the speed limiter?:
CRASHNBURN 05-23-2007, 09:21 AM Limiter kicks in around 95-96. :(

TIM Z 05-23-2007, 09:55 PM i really havent played with the settings but after reading crashburns post ,can i adjust the boost for each level or are you just turning the boost to 3 when your normal driving? i like to keep everything "ready" for a level 6 smoke show if i get a tailgater or ricer! BTW, which level is the fastest with not having a lift pump you guys find? i seem to do best in level 4 as 5 and 6 "buck" do to lack of fuel.
CRASHNBURN 05-23-2007, 11:09 PM Each Edge level 1 -6 you an adjust the boost from 1 (no smoke) through 5 (must smoke). They will stay with you when you go from level 2 to level 6.

Thank you! And you find boost level of 3 in power level 3 gives the best economy?
Mr. D 05-24-2007, 03:07 PM Good, because so far I like level 3, boost 3 the best! It seems to be just as quick 0 to 60 mph as the higher levels on my heavy truck (6.0 sec.). I'm not into high speed WOT! Too many wackos to pull in front of you! I zip from 0 to 70 mph when safe and then act my age (or at least half my age)!
So far I have had absolutely zero problems or alerts with my Edge! Crossed fingers!
CRASHNBURN 05-24-2007, 03:23 PM On my truck, level 2 with a boost of 5 is the best for mileage for me. The level 1 were really bad for mileage for me. Maybe a long long haul, but the only one that was okay was level 1 with a boost of five, but level 2 with a boost of 5 was better & that is what the Edge guy that I know told me too. They should know there product.

I'll go with that because I have the same truck as yours except mine is a prettier white (at least in the High Desert heat) and it was built on my birthday! :p: Thanx for the advice!
TIM Z 05-24-2007, 10:18 PM Great discussion here! thanks again CRASHBURN, i checked my low fueling boost adjustment and on Level 6 i had it only on 3, I quickly put it on 5 and got ALOT more smoke!! I LOVE IT!! This edge has treated me right so far. i would like to get EFI live soon but keep the attitude display( after i get my trans built!)But for now i like the EDGE.
Mr. D 05-26-2007, 03:15 AM I found out I had the tire size incorrect in the Edge! I corrected it.
0 to 60 dropped to 5.8 seconds
1/4 mile at the limiter 95 MPH in 14.3 seconds
Not bad for such a heavy truck!
At the end of the month I'll get some MPG numbers on towing a 23' travel trailer in the California Sierra!
