Hi guys. I searched but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I am currently setting up the fuel system in my K5 from scratch (diesel conversion). I am buying a fuel cell and external electric fuel pump. I have a spin-on type filter to mount to the firewall, but I know I need more than that. I will be using B20 biodiesel but not in extremely cold weather and with a brand new fuel system so I'm guessing (hoping) that I won't have any pluggage problems.

Question is, am I okay running a coarse inline fuel filter before the pump, then another finer inline filter before the spin-on, or should I run a filter between the spin-on and the IP? What types of media am I looking at for all of these filters? I'm totally new to diesels and don't have any experience other than what I've read and researched.

Thanks all,

Jonathan

all I have on the diesel side is a john deere box filter setup, similar to the factory 85 box filter. if you're runnin bio, it will tend to plug up the small inline filters real easy, been there done that. just keep an extra filter handy and use the one filter. :anitoof:

So bio will plug the filter(s) even in warm weather and with a virgin fuel system? I thought it only had problems when you converted from petroleum to bio and also when you ran it in cold weather. Either way I guess it doesn't matter since the filters shouldn't be too hard to access for change out.

Thanks for the info. ;)

No, good quality biodiesel doesnt' plug your fuel filter other than perhaps when you first change, and even that isn't the biodiesel but the crud from the petrodiesel, and in the extreme cold. I've run B80 as low as 10F with no problem. Don't know about the small inline filters 4DR4X4 talks about - I don't use them. With B20 you aren't likely to have any change-over problem at all. If you are using WVO (not biodiesel) you could have filter-clogging issues - but the biodiesel you buy is usually ASTM certified and in my opinion is as good a fuel as you can get.

OH! I see you have a 95 G30, too. Cool.

Thanks instarx. As a side note, where do you get your B100?

I belong to a local co-op that has a trail of B100 pumps in NC. There are also a growing number of B20 pumps at truck stops and normal gas stations around here.

You may want to try to find a co-op in your area. I've seen co-op B100 prices from cheaper than petro to much more than petro, it just depends on the philosophy of the co-op.

Here is one biodiesel locator. it isn't perfect but its a start.

I am talking about the small 3/8 line clear or metal filters. they plug up way too quickly. i had a clean system also, but had trouble til I eliminated those from the system.
