just how diesels are.

i blocked my egr and rerouted my pcv and my oil is staying cleaner a lot longer.

You can also add a by-pass filter setup that will analytically clean your oil and make sure your oil is clean, even if it turns black. diesel has a problem of soot getting into the oil causing it to turn black faster. The by-pass filter helps remove the soot from the oil. The by-pass filter removes particles down to 1 micron where most sooting is in the 2-5 microns. A hair strand is about 100 microns. then using that filtration system, your oil changes can go even longer by just having it analyzed at regular intervals to be sure. Good luck

Oils will turn black over time even if perfectly clean. Some makes and models stay clear longer than others. Color alone can not be used as a cleanliness indicator. Bypass filters will definitely make one more comfortable using "black" oil.
Have a partner using the AMSOIL HDD 5W-30 with bypass filtration. He had gone over 60000 miles on one oil change. Says it been black as long as he can remember(over 5 years now), but his OA keeps coming back clean.

introduces crank vent to turbo. i don't thing it would help with keeping oil clean but figured i'd mention it just incase it does

iirc soot is sub-micronic

Does any oil in our diesels turn black? Cause i changed my oil the first time at 2000 miles, and it was black in no time. Is that normal?

absolutely.

As stated above. It's a diesel and it will turn black almost immediatly. If it doesn't turn black, you should rethink your oil. Not only does the higher soot content turn it black, but if the detergents are doing their job, the black is contaminants they cleaned off and suspended in the oil instead of attaching to your parts.

What's next? "My tailpipe is all sooty on the inside - is that normal?":D

It's a diesel! - black is gooooood!;)

I'm guessing you're realizing it's all in fun - teampsycho, please don't get offended. Perfectly valid for you to ask the question if you are new to diesels, it would be a pretty scary oil color in a gasser! The soot produced in a diesel engine cannot be filtered out by normal means, (and it won't wash out of your work clothes, either! wear black if you're planning on working on your exhaust or EGR system!) and one of the main reasons that diesel lubricating oils must carry the CH- CI- (and now CJ-) designator is soot management in the additive package. I run an Amsoil BMK-17 dual remote and my drained oil is always black as india ink, but my used oil analyses (UOA) have been coming up exceptional in spite of the color.

Exactly my concern. Thank you for clearing it up, or blacking it up??

If you in fact have a 2007 Duramax, then you are using the WRONG oil in it. This year requires CJ-4 oil. AmsOil 15w-40 is CI-4 oil. You need to put in AmsOil DEO 5w-40 ASAP.

If your oil is not turning black then you have a problem. You on the other hand have a perfectly normal truck.:D
