Remove wheel well lining.

Unbolt starter move out of the way.

Find a buddy.

A inch and seven sixteenth box end works well to spin the crank to access bolts.

boy you guys work the hard way...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

36" prybar to spin the engine, pry on the teeth and use the frame rail as the fulcrum. Many have seen my do this

15mm swivel socket on a 24" extension with a 1/2 impact,, maybe a breaker bar for the stubborn ones....

What Eric saidhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley14.gif If you put a big prybar on the lugs on the converter were the bolts bolt into you can push up and spin the dude prety much to its final spot and then pry on the teeth. I made myself a special tool to do the pushing up on reinstal since you cant get a prybar on the lugs of the converter on a SC since the front cover is much thicker

You will probably drop a bolt on removal. Dont freak you will get it once you yank the trans. But if you do it on reinstallhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif Dont drop a bolt. And dont tighten em all down as you go on reistall. Do things the right way even though you really want to be lazy. Resist the urge to be a jack ass and be lazy. Get each one started with some lock tight on there and then once you have em all started do the final crank down. A friend does help BTW but its very doable by yourself, just means you need to do a bunch of back and forth.

Be careful, allison is a porky girlhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley30.gifEdited by: ratlover

Phil, you missed the deal about the flywheel having a smaller hole in which to start the process didnt you.... start with that and crank em down as you go.. No sense in doing it twicehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

Yea I tried with hand tools. I checked mine to see if any were loose.
To do it yourself at home and regular tools it's a real pain. Had to
use a friggin 30" stacked extension from the front of the engine.
Wonder
why they didn't design simpler access like most, that the bottom.

For the Novice removal of the wheelwell and Starter is the ticket. Eric gets paid ,well you know you've picked up your trucks with "prints" every where. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

Seriously for Eric he can do it by touch now,he don't have to see it!

How would you do it without removing the starter?

Who said you could?

I think it's implied You can't. Removing the well even gives better access to the starter.

Yeah I missed that point till after I talked to you and she was all put back togetherhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif But once you have 5 in and the 6th is just being a little hoe you are pretty much SOL. I doubt anyone will ever touch my truck but they will probably get a kick outa what I wrote on my converter in the access cover oposite said bolt hole. Figured i would makr it so I wouldnt get confused possible and screw it up and by that time I was no longer a happy camperhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley22.gif

BTW I did it with the wheel on but the wheel liner removed. But I'm scrawny and could weasel my self in there easy enough. If I woulda had a lift instead of a pit I probably woulda yanked the wheel too just to make it easier.
