My service 4wd light came on last night and I need to service it. What type fluid goes in it? and How much?

Thanks

When my light was on it was because the transfer case was leaking from pump rub.

I don't think mine is leaking. Atleast I haven't noticed any in the carport?

I was thinking I would go ahead and service it. But I don't know what goes in it.
is it mercon 3? gear oil?

What did your repair consist of?

I don't believe that the "Service 4WD...." message means that it is time to change the fluid. IIRC It is activated via a sensor that is indicating that something is wrong.

Most take ATF. Dexron III. Now dexron VI has replaced it.
Here's the capacities based on your type:
Transfer Case,BW1370/4401..........3.2 pints
Transfer Case,NP241/243..........4.4 pints
Transfer Case,NV236/246..........4.0 pints
Transfer Case,NV261/263..........4.0 pints
Transfer Case,NV149..........4.9 pints
The 236/246 must take a special fluid, ATF is not listed??

we tried an encoder motor on mine, a transfer case control module and none of those were the case. It was broken wires up near the fuse box so keep all of that in mind.

there is a news letter or something out that says to put 3 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil in the transfer case through the speed sensor hole.

Service 4wd means there is a fault with the 4wd system.

I just talked to the dealer and the parts guy could not find it in the computer so he transfered me to the diesel tech and he gave me a part # 88861800
what is that? he said manual transfer case lube. He said that the other fluid was Auto trak and the only trucks that use that are the ones that have the button that says auto 4wd. Mine only says 4 hi 4 low no auto

I rolled under neath mine and check to see if it was leaking and it was not.
where would it be rubbing a hole if the pump was bad?

You will need to have the code read. Changing the fluid will not fix the service 4wd message. There is no fluid sensor.

The fluid is just ATF.

If you are looking for the first sign of a pump rib, count 5 case bolts to the right of the drain plug, and look for a tiny hole, if you do not see fluid, not to worry. see this thread.

I decided that I would check my fluid to see what was in it because I kept getting different answers. And it apprears that what is in it is motor oil? The dealer said it was manual tc fluid and everyone on here said it was dex III. when I loosened the plug it looked like motor oil???
now what? drain it and rreplace it with 5w 30?
thanks

the ATF gets cooked to the point it looks like motor oil, so that is why it looks like motor oil in it.

So was it brown or Gooy Black?

You can use ATF, but the update from the manufacturer of the transfer cases says 3 quarts of 5W-30 motor oil. I choose to use a synthetic oil as well, but it is up to you.

It was actually brown. It could have been trans fluid but it really looked like motor oil. I am taking it to the shop tonight for them to check my injectors again. So, if they fix it I will change the fluid to motor oil.
Also, Why the extra quart?
can you get the extra qt in by jacking up the rear end of the truck?

There is a thread in the Allision section that explains this hole fluid thing. It takes 2 qts. in the fill hole then put the plug in then the last Qt. in the speedo hole. Just be extra careful with those drain plugs they are very soft and could be stripped very easy.
