: How much oil do you burn?
chuntag95 10-04-2004, 11:20 AM I have around 7200 miles on the oil and I have burned about a quart and a half, maybe a little more. It is Delvac 1. It used to not burn a drop, so this is relatively new. Is this just because it's breaking (broken) in? It seems that running the highway makes it worse. I noticed a little was gone on the last change, but this time is worse.
I'll be at 45k by the end of the week and have to do all my yearly super service, so didn't top off yesterday when I was down 3/4 or a quart. Next weekend it will be 7 filters to change, plus fluids.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif
Roegs 10-04-2004, 11:47 AM I only have 13,000 miles on mine, so this may not be a good comparison. I use Delvac 1300, and change every 4-5k. Does not burn any oil in between changes.

I've always used Delo 400 15w-40 and have never seen any oil consumption.
Just returned from a 900 mile round trip delivering a friends 20' Champion bass boat averaging 75 mph and nary a drop used.
Some say its normal to use some oil but in my case I don't see it.
I would say a thinner oil may cause you to use some but that jmho.

RonJT 10-04-2004, 12:04 PM Do you normally go that long--7200miles on an oil change?
I found that when I used Delvac 5W-40 at around 5K it started using oil--and then it would really use oil at 5.5k and up--I changed oil at that point.
About the same thing happened when I switched to Amsoil 15W-40(Thinking a heavier oil might help). Some have said you have to go through several cycles of the new oil before a real judgement of the oil can be made.
Not there yet. I am on my third Amsoil oil change. At 3k miles no oil usage--but let us see what happens at 5-6k.
My total miles is 25K.
a64pilot 10-04-2004, 12:04 PM 85,000 miles, 5,000 mile interval Delo 400 since new. No noticable oil consumption ever.
chuntag95 10-04-2004, 12:05 PM I am planning on going back to a 15-40 to see if it stops. The consumption did coincide with going to Delvac 1. Also looking to see if my oil pressure gets back above 30. Edited by: chuntag95
a bear 10-04-2004, 12:08 PM I burn about 1/2 qt or a little more every 7,500.(Also using Delvac 1300) I'm not sure of the overall acceptable range but consumption does seem to vary from truck to truck and sometimes oil change to oil change. I don't recall where I heard the numbers but I would think 1-1/2 qts in 7500 would be OK.
precision37 10-04-2004, 12:12 PM I run Rotela synthetic and change at 6000 to 7000 miles. Ten qts. go in,
but only about eight come out. The dipstick still reads at just above the
full mark before the change. The first few oil changes were with regular
oil and less than a half qt. difference. Truck now has 51000 miles on it.
RonJT 10-04-2004, 12:19 PM My hot idle oil pressure stayed the same with Delvac 1 (5W-40) and the Amsoil AME 15W-40.--around one needle width below 30psi.
Lightning 10-04-2004, 01:32 PM I run DELO400 and change every 10,000 miles (no towing). Don't burn a drop, 32,000 on the truck.
chuntag95 10-04-2004, 01:56 PM I go right at 7500 between changes and use synthetic. I also do an analysis every time. Everything looks good on all the analysis so far. I was going to skip this one, but ordered a kit today to check now that I think about it. I'm such a worry wort.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif
MaxRock 10-04-2004, 02:07 PM Chuntag95,
I've run Delvac 1300 since day 1. I initially was changing oil every 3k miles, but the oil looked brand new. I have extended the interval to 5-6k miles. Currently my truck has 95k and does not use any oil between changes.
MaxRock
Mackin 10-04-2004, 03:17 PM Delvac I run regular drain intervals no usage. When I first swapped to Synthetic at 5K ,I blew thru one Quart on the initial change over in 300 miles.I did run with a hopped up Cummins on the rev limiter on that trip so...
No other clue why ,but good to go every sense.

Stoner 10-04-2004, 03:35 PM chuntag95.....
56,000 miles on truck...running w/ an extra 125 units of juice http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
5,500 miles on Delvac 1..........about 1/2 qt low.
Diesel Power 10-04-2004, 03:47 PM 49k miles.. most of them running the tts extreme.. the most i go is about 6000 miles, but i've never noticed a drop being used.. delvac 1..
turbospl311 10-04-2004, 07:02 PM My truck has 15,500 miles. I changed at 1000k miles and was good. At 5000k miles i Switched to Amsoil. was 1/2 quart low. at 10k miles, I was about 1/2 quart low and at 15k miles 2weeks ago I was about 1/2 quart.
I just figure it is going to drop a little as the engine breaks in. 1/2 quart is not to bad. The dodge used about the same but my dad's ford uses about 1 1/2 per 5k miles. He has 36k on his P-smoke.
Rockin 10-05-2004, 01:21 PM 31000 miles and no noticeable oil consumption. On the crappy dipstick, it always looks full.
chuntag95 10-05-2004, 02:00 PM I did the drilled holes through the dipstick to make it more readable. I have more confidence, especially when the oil is new. If the hole if full of oil, it's there vs. a smear from the tube.
JohnnyO 10-05-2004, 05:57 PM @ 7000 miles it's 1/2 qt low. I change 2X's a year between 8000 to 9000 miles.
I am using Valvoline Premium Blue 15W-40 for the summer and Rotella synthetic 5W-40 for the winterEdited by: JohnnyO

I hate our crappy dipstick. It seems easy to smear on the way out. How did you drill holes?
Ben
BigRedD/A 10-05-2004, 06:45 PM blnagel I clamped the dipstick in a vice with a shop rag around it, then I took my dremel and shaved the ridges off the dipstick to create a smooth surface then I drilled 1/16th inch holes in the clear span all the way to the top of the dipstick, I drilled another hole at the very top of the stick where it starts to tapper ( just in case of a high oil reading ) hope this helps!
SPICER 10-05-2004, 08:59 PM I have the Oilguard bypass and am at 10k miles on the oil using Delvac1. I have never had to add oil and have taken 3 oil samples for analysis(keeping tabs on the new Oilguard system). I have probably removed 15-20 oz. of oil doing oil samples and keeping a small bottle of each sample for possible future analysis.
I just looked at the dipstick and I am all the way to the bottom. Basically at the "A", so I believe this is 2 quarts low? Anyone know for sure? So between 15-20 oz. for samples and 10k miles I have burned 2 quarts?
One thing I did notice.... I was at about 1 quart low at 8000 miles or so. So in the last 2k miles it seems to be burning faster. Wonder if this is similar to the "fuel gauge" reading where the first 1/2 of a tank goes 300 miles and the last 1/2 gets you another 75!?!? SPICEREdited by: SPICER
problemchild 10-05-2004, 09:55 PM I was using amsoil synthetic diesel and it started burning like a mofo at 5k miles.
Now Im running shell synthetic and ill let you know.
SPICER 10-05-2004, 10:19 PM HEY!!!! Why did the little picture under my name suddenly change???? I didn't do it! Looks like a turbo blade worn out from a crappy air filter like a UNI or K&N!!!! Better go back to the OE paper!
On another subject, from "A" to "F" on the dipstick, how many quarts is that? One. two? SPICEREdited by: SPICER

chuntag95 10-06-2004, 09:50 AM Here is a blurry picture of my dipstick that I took with my palm. It was raining, so I got one in the parking garage. I took about 10 and none were clear. This is the best of the bunch.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif

problemchild 10-06-2004, 11:57 AM Also it takes 5 minutes for my oil to drain back donw to the pan and get a good reading.
letsgo 10-06-2004, 05:01 PM I tried the holes in the dip stick, still couldnt read the oil level.
Sooo I now have a plastic tub the length of the dip stick 1/4" out side diameter, that is used for checking oil level, nooo guess work now.
good luck
JEBar 10-06-2004, 06:55 PM 76,000+ miles ... Shell Rotella-T is the only oil I have used ... change oil every 5,000 (once on a trip went just over 6,000) ... to date have never had to add any between changes, nor have I noticed any drop in the level on the dip-stick
Jim
chuntag95 10-06-2004, 07:42 PM Here are some better pictures of my dipstick.

GMC2500HD 10-06-2004, 11:34 PM I only have 13,500 on mine and have not had to add any oil between changes. I have even checked it a few times just to make sure. I know with the gassers I had I sometimes had to top it off... Hopefully this motor will not be that way...
SPICER 10-07-2004, 02:17 PM I sent in my 10k mile oil analysis today. It will be interesting to see how the oil is doing at 10k with the Oilguard bypass. At 5k it was good as new. In 10k I never added a drop of make-up oil. After I sampled the oil I added about 2 quarts of fresh Delvac1. If the oil sample comes back fine I will probably run it to 15k and sample one more time. This will give me an indication of how to choose my oil change interval for the future.
According to Oilguard, they guarantee to be able to DOUBLE the oil change interval. (that would be 20k). They additionally say it is safe to go 4x the oci (that would be 40k) with oil sampling as a safeguard. In fact, some semi's have gone to 100k with synthetic oil and the Oilguard system! Wow!!! SPICER
I use Rotella synthetic, and when changing oil at 6500 miles, it is perhaps a quart down.
BRUCE 10-11-2004, 04:19 PM Like Mackin, first load of syn. burned 1 qt. in 3000miles. Seems to have gotted used to it now as no usage last 2000miles.
chuntag95 10-11-2004, 04:45 PM I pulled a sample of oil and sent it off. I replaced the Delvac 1 with Amsoil 15W-40 Diesel. The pressure is back above 30 psi vs. the upper 20's. I figure I got 5 psi back. Time will tell if the consumption stops too.
