What actually is making that unique diesel sound at idle? Is it the lifters, valves etc.

On a 6.2/6.5, it's unique sound could only come from IDI. The fuel is injected into a prechamber and onto the glowplug tip which remains white hot. The combustion spreads out to the combustion chamber and a nonosecond later equilizes. Thus, the unique rut, rut, rut, of combustion. When the engine's cold the injection is generally less volatile due to relatively lower temps, comes somewhat advanced of TDC and sounds even more pronounced. The colder it is, at start -up, the more advanced it will be with more fuel and the louder it will sound.

Indirect injection. The head has a pre-combustion chamber the glow plug and injector are in.
