: Alternate fuel........

This may be a really stupid question, but I have to ask. I have access to an abundance of JET A-1 fuel in my area and was wondering how the LB7 would like this fuel. The only reason I ask is because I know both are Kerosene based. Even if a guy could just mix in partial JET A-1 into the regular diesel it would save money!! Someone please let me know if my imagination is getting away from me!!!

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, the JET A-1 is FREE, so this could save me lots of $$$$Edited by: Zorganov

Do a search on it you are not the first. It works fine on the older low pressure systems, but there is some concern that Jet fuel would not provide enough lubrication for the problematic injectors. If you do run it I would run a good additive made specifically for lubrication. I believe pure winter diesel is very similar to Jet A. Your mileage will suffer (who cares if it's free) and power will be down a little. BTW the military burns Jet fuel in all of it's Diesels and has done so for years, simplifies logistics only having to supply one fuel.

Be careful. Running JP-8 in the diesels back in afghanistan made them run significantly hotter than when running normal "diesel". That fuel burns much hotter than diesel will, so you might want to "cut" it with normal diesel if you can. Don't know how well the 2 will mix. Maybe try a little in a glass, see what happens if you leave it sit overnight, etc?

Where were you running normal Diesel? Last 15 or so years in the ARMY (before retirement) only fuel available was JP-8. In fact the only thing in the units I was in that didn't burn JP-8 was the cook stoves.

On edit: the two mix fine, on convoys t the NTC etc. we would burn Diesel bought at civilian truck stops.Edited by: a64pilot

Bah, of course it's a Pilot that's corrects me. ;)

JP-2 is what I am thinking of... JP-8 being standard army diesel.

Zorganov, Jp-8 and jet a+ are essentially identical. If you supply is from the AirForce it's probably jp-8.

So what you're saying is it should be good to run in the Max? Of course with a pile of additives? Or would you not risk it?

Personally if it were free, I would run it. With additives. I think what you going to buy at the pump this winter will be real close to JP-8 anyway. I'm not sure, I get my info second hand, I stay away from cold as much as I can, but I think that a large part of winter Diesel is kerosene and that JP-8 is mostly a highly refined kerosene wit additives.

Maybe George Morrison or someone else that KNOWS will step in and edjucate us.Edited by: a64pilot

This thread should answer your questions about lubricity.

Wow, that's really informative!! I think I just may give it a try for one tank and see what happens. Sounds like most of the boys doing it are adding a 1:100 ratio of 2 stroke oil to the Jet-A and doing fine!! I got a lot of 2-stroke toys so oil is always handy!! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

Stay away from the home brews. Use an additive specifically made for Diesel engines. The old low pressure systems could run almost anything and not be hurt. I don't know about common rail systems. Contact George at avlube and ask his advice on an additive package.( I hope he dosen't mind me recommending him ) If your getting the fuel for free, you can afford the best in additive packages and still come out far cheaper than what the rest of us pay for fuel. A lot of the reason I say run it is that I believe the injectors are the weak link in the system and the are now warrented for 200,000 miles. Also if your truck has many miles I would change the fuel filter after about two tanks of jet was run through it as it will clean everything out of your tank. I also wouldn't take the truck to the dealer if it developed drivability issues with jet in the tank. Run it almost empty and refuel with straight D2.

What happened to JP-4.I retired from AF in 66 and I thought JP-4 was the jet fuel then. If my mermory isn't completely shot I seem to remember we used Aviation Gasoline to pep it up when it went flat in storage.Edited by: Bill Gisse

JP-4 left about 10 years ago I think. Cheap fuel, mostly gasoline I think. IIRC wouldn't run in a Diesel. Used to have to have Mogas for spark engines, Diesel for Diesels and JP-4 for turbines. Military got rid of spark engines and JP-8 works in both Diesels and turbines. Only one fuel to supply and in time of conflict anybody can get fuel from anybody else.

I first ran into JP4 when some F-80's came into Narsasarck greenland on thier way to Europe. Beleive they were the first ones to cross the Atlantic. I was crewing on a US Coast Guard PBY out of Argentia Newfoundland at the time9( 48 I think) and we were refueling at Narsaarack .
