I have a vibration at (starts) 80 mph I think it's a u-joint but dealer this week said they were OK ..I don't believe him.

do you DUALLY OWNERS have this vibration at high speeds , is this typicle(sp) I have had tires rebalanced already......

also can you give me a spicer #( or quality u-joint) so I can change to greasable ones, for piece of mind anyways.

any advice appr...I know I should be below 80 but I am a maintaince freek and dealer say that all dually vibrate at high speedshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

My 01 dosen't vibrate at any speed up to the limiter. My 97 Dooley didn't either. Can't help you with the U-joint info. Pretty sure P-nut can

Yes I do and dealers have told me the same thing. They all tell me it is tires.

The problem is the tires were new and still have the problem. My vibration starts about 60 mph and gets worse as you go faster so at 80 I am vibrating like crazy.

I have a long rount trip to make here soon and I am not looking forward to taking the truck. Pretty sad. I am so proud of my d-max and can hardly stand taking it at speeds over 50. Sad.

Trick I've noticed. When pulling my fiver the vibration is 1/2 as bad?

I also need advice on what to do. It has not always vibrated.

Has anything been done to the truck to alter the rear ride height? If
so, the carrier bearing between the driveshaft sections may need to be
lowered with a spacer.

Also, have you tried rotating the duals to split them up? If you
have two wheels which are kinda balanced by themselves, but they are
placed together in such a way , the whole assy could then be
unbalanced. I'd probably rotate the outer duals 90 degrees, or
swap the outers between sides and see what happens.

Good luck.

Well I have my torsion bars cranked up and I routinely go 75-85 and have never had a vibration issue, even towing. I have read many threads that this has been a U- joint issue. However the outcome debating this issue with the dealer is futile. They will debate why are you going 80? When they road test they will do 55 and say it is just fine and comment in the service request "Customer complaint unverified". If I was in your shoes, I would just get them replaced and move on. I would suspect it is the carrier bearing. Sometimes the cost of going to battle would have covered the change anyway.

Vibration or shake/shimmy? I would pull and inspect
driveshaft (joints and bearing) for starters and check it for
balance too at a drive shaft shop (not dealer). If problem is still
there then have rear tires checked for out of roundness and spun
balanced on the truck (not off of it) Do all on this and you should find
the cause and cure.

Snoman...I think you are right on the mark! It really sounds to me like a tire balance, tire out round, or bent or warped wheel problem.

Just completed 6700 mile trip from TN to Pacific Coast Hwy and back. Several days at 75 to 85 MPH. No vibration on our Dually. This truck is the most comfortable and best handling truck that I have driven. Good luck in finding the vibration.

mpl987, try having the tires balanced again at the same place that you just paid to do them, BUT this time watch them do the balancing!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley22.gif Ask the tech to check for either "out of round" indications, a bent rim, or any unusual tire wear. If they have the capability to do high speed balancing that would be even better.

I can't recount the number of times I have taken my vehicles in for tire rotations and walked out with vibrations. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley21.gif More often than not when I take it back and watch them the tires run better.

If that doesn't work, ditto what the others said. JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

My 02 cc dually had the same problem, replaced the u-joints and rebalanced the driveshaft. The cost should not be that much, find and driveshaft shop and do the work yourself.

shift it in to 3rd and see if it does it at the same RPMs as when you drive 80

Check the orientation of the rim's holes on the dual wheels. The holes of each of the rims should be together. I keep the valve stems together to insure the holes are correctly aligned. I have heard this also can be a source of vibration.

I would take it to a good tire shop and have them re-balance the tires, and ask them to use a 4 way instead of an air wrench to tighten the lug nuts up, especially on your rear duels.

I agree that it's most likely a tire balance or wheel problem if the U-joints seem tight.

I've run across balance problems on some of my other dually's, but not this one. It seems that the normal tire balance machines don't deal especially well with the wheels on these trucks. Or the tech just doesn't spend enough time doing it.

I had one truck I put chrome wheels on and didn't want to discard them for balance problems several shops blamed on the wheels. It took a bit of looking for someone who could spin balance the the tires on the truck, but it fixed the probem I'd chased for months on that truck.

Do not forget to check end play in wheel hub bearings either.

My '02 Dually experiences no vibration...at all. Sorry that I am of no help here.

Our dually vibrated from day 1. After visiting a local auto mechanic and a tire shop we ended up replacing two bent rims and we replaced the general americrap tires with Michelins. (1000 miles on truck) Vibration was totally eliminated. Last week I put on Rancho adjustable shocks (15000 miles on truck) and was amazed what it did for the ride. Only sorry I waited a year to do it.

I am going to try the tire change thing........got to get some cash for that though maybe try left rear 2 first, then right..don't suppose dealer will be of any helphttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

newer balancers have what is called "match mounting". At a tire shop this will be a premium service since the tire must be dismounted and rotated on the rim once or twice(each tire). Our shop just got a new balancer with this option and it works. Used to be if a 35 inch tire was 8 or more ounces out of balance we'd have to order another tire, that problem is gone now with the match mounting procedure.

ockgator, do we have a tire tech in our midst?http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley25.gif We have a lube specialist in LanduytG, several mechanics/techs, a bunch of engineers (go figure?), a tire expert would be nice! JJ http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
