<H5>Circuit Description</A></H5>
The glow plug system is used to assist in providing the heat required to begin combustion during cold engine temperatures. The glow plugs are heated before and during cranking, as well as initial engine operation. The engine control module (ECM) controls the glow plug ON times by monitoring coolant temperature and glow plug voltage. The California Glow Plug system has eight individual glow plug supply circuits between the controller and the glow plugs. If the feedback voltage from the controller to the ECM is not within range, DTC P0380 will set.<A name=ss2-794636><A href="http://127.0.0.1:9001/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=794636&evc=sm&pubid=271&cellId =63655&mspsdsubkey=2064#ss2-794636" target="_blank">

If the glow plug relay is stuck in the ON position, check for proper operation of the glow plugs. When the glow plugs are commanded ON by the scan tool, an internal engine control module (ECM) timer protects the glow plugs from damage by cycling them ON for 3 seconds and the OFF for 12 seconds. The glow plug relay battery feed wire nut at the relay should be tested for proper torque. The California glow plug system will send the following voltages, or signals to the ECM:</FONT

I've been setting the P0380 code for about 3 weeks now for some reason. It sometimes will go out for a day or so then comeback on. It started with the very first cold snap of the season when the temps got into the 30's. I cleared it the other day with an Actron 9135 scanner but it came back the next day. Have any of you found out what seems to cause this? Is it anything to worry about?

Mine has been setting the same code on a cold start. Easy way to check the glow plugs?

disconnect the wire from each one and see if they have continuity to ground...

I had the same issue with mine, reset come back a couple of days later etc.In the end it was the glow plug controller on my truck. The emissions warranty should cover it if you are out of initial 3/36 warranty.I assume in the US you have 5/100,000 warranty on emission components.

I didn't feel like taking mine to the dealer either.. i just bought a glow plug and it took a whopping 10 minutes to replace it counting getting the tools out.... 9mm and 12mm socket. And get this- right before i replace it, i hook the tech2 up.. now it shows 2 bad glow plugs! So i replace the 1, and now i'm back to 1 bad one.. i did test it and the bad one is in fact bad.. guess i'll buy a 6-pack... here's the bad one:

Took mine to the dealer today and it turns out that the problem is a faulty "glow plug controller", not the plugs themselves.

I remember a reprogram for this and have seen the controller and intake air heater both.
