: Locating Remote FSD
Turbine Doc 10-03-2004, 07:58 PM As some may remember I finally quit trying to make a lame dog hunt in this thread http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10778 and bought Bill Heath's cooler/remote kit installed 500 mi ago no problems to report only problem where to put it, normal location is on plastic mud shield, but I have a IC there on mine, did not want to impede any airflow thru the rad or trans & oil coolers, so mounted on liscence plate holder, Only mod was to cut hole in plastic mount frame to allow FSD to pass thru it, and some washers as shims to keep FSD from contacting bumper.
Keeping the spare on the fender mounted cooler just in case. Bill's kit is a new FSD bonded to a 6 x 12" alloy heat sink plate, with extension harness can make to special length as in my application to route around the IC.

HowieE 10-03-2004, 08:06 PM Interesting location. Here in New Jersey we are stuck with a plate in the front so mine had to go up inside the bumper. Picture on http://mysite.verizon.net/vze54tx9/ (http://mysite.verizon.net/vze54tx9/)
Turbine Doc 10-03-2004, 08:58 PM I knew where yours was Howie, and was thinking along same lines, but just did not feel like doing that much fabrication, saw the gap behind the plate mount already, thought a hole in it might fit the FSD, it did, as you see from my novelty plate "Luv Bugs" and all, a state mandated plate could also go there in it's place. bowtie 02-10-2006, 10:51 AM OK TD where's the edit at?
xyz12383318 02-10-2006, 10:55 AM It looks like there is no heat sync only plastic under the plate is this concerning? Cound't you use the licence plate as the heat sync?
bowtie 02-10-2006, 10:57 AM TD is using the plate that Bill at heath Diesel sells in his relocation kit. It isn't a cooler as we know it but it does remove heat, some kind of special metal or something I think.

I have Bill's kit. It's just a nice big piece of aluminum. Large enough to dissipate a lot of heat.
Sincerely,
Rob :)
If you can find someone who can bend aluminium plates (sheets), you can have him make an aluminium mud plate to replace the plastic one.
It will only take a sheet of aluminium and one bend to the right angle. Maybe you can make the bend even yourselfe. Then you drill two holes into the plate at the back side, take off the mounting bracket from the plastic plate and install it on the new aluminium plate.
That gives you a sturdy mud plate you can mount the PMD on. It's easy to do.
Turbine Doc 02-11-2006, 07:07 AM My IC is where the mud plate is so I'm on the bumper, the Heath plate is just behind the vanity plate, with driver aft pointed toward bumper, I notched out the plastic holder for clearance, plus some washers as spacers so driver does not contact the bumper
stingthieves 02-12-2006, 08:51 AM I would be concerned that some “Soccer Mom” would back into and destroy it in a parking situation!
Turbine Doc 02-12-2006, 09:41 AM It's a risk a minor one "I hope" but I also have a spare on a DSG finned heat sink under hood on drivers side fender which was 1st attempt to keep one alive.
Put a fan on it. I have mine there for maybe two years now, and it's still alive [knock on wood ...]
Turbine Doc 10-22-2006, 09:11 PM I got a question in PM earlier today asking since I have an underbumper IC, where did I mount my Heath FSD kit, mine is the 4x4 version which bumper mounted as you see in pics, plenty of airflow to keep things cool it's been there a little over 2 years now, no hiccups to report at all. I'll be mounting the one for the Burb there as well.
Silvy 10-23-2006, 09:30 PM That is a real slick idea TD! Can't even tell that its mounted there. Other than someone backing into it (pretty slim chance) it will work great there. I may have to move my heath kit there too and mount an IC down below):h
dhjunkie 10-23-2006, 11:24 PM Here is the thread that I did doing the glow plug / injector replacement. TD gave me the idea am I took it a step further, Thanks TD!

wild willy 12-14-2006, 04:00 AM I used Heath's 2WD relocation kit and put it behind the bumper to get the full amount of air on the heat sink and the FSD. Mine has been there for about 2 years like TD's without incident. FSD remains cool enough to put your hand on it even during 80* temps and pulling the trailer.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/garage.php?do=big&p=10027
Turbine Doc 01-08-2007, 01:36 PM Seeing as some of you were concerned about health of my Heath driver from Soccer Moms I translated my/your concerns about the "danger" to my spousal unit who gave me permission to buy necessary armor kit to protect it. It was also my Christmas wish, See attached photos of correct way to "Up-Armor" a driver :D now mounted to the back side of the Buck Stop Bumper
Dan Hunter 01-08-2007, 01:42 PM Heavens, TD! What with that lump of diesel up front and now...this? I bet you can do "stoppies"!
Turbine Doc 01-08-2007, 01:47 PM It does now sit a mite lower up front than the rear, that is about 300# of bumper, I'll need to tweak the torsion bar some, or maybe get one from a 2500 or 3500 truck/burb, or I could steal the one from the wifes Burb in the background there in pic 2.
The bumper is also rigged for mounting of a winch in the bumper, but I'll go with a reciever mount that will allow for front or rear "un stucking" pulling, invariabily when I've been stuck before the winch has been on the wrong end of things.
bowtie 01-08-2007, 05:22 PM so what's up with that red bug in the photo's, That yours too?

Yup wife's TDI toy, she part times as a courrier delivery for a physcian's billing service picking up & dropping off charges. VW TDI isn't a comfort vehicle hence the need for the Burb, but at 40+ mpg it's a perfect scoot around town buggy. She gets all kinds of help at the pump "hey lady you know that's Diesel you are putting in your car" or "lady you need to have somebody check out your engine, it doesn't sound right"
Jaybr 01-08-2007, 07:33 PM How does the PMD hold up to water? My truck is my hunting rig, was up over the bumper in swamp a couple times last week.
DavidPhillips 01-08-2007, 07:38 PM Heath Diesel one is sealed. Others need to be sealed if going under.
Turbine Doc 01-08-2007, 08:52 PM According to Heath one of his tests was running submerged in a bucket of water, IIRC 2 months under water was period of the test.
gmctd 01-09-2007, 12:36 AM Wow!! nice remote mount FSD heatsink!! Santa order that direct, or locally??
Turbine Doc 01-09-2007, 04:58 AM Direct order from BuckStop
gmctd 01-09-2007, 08:44 AM I'm on it.................
Matt Bachand 04-02-2008, 10:38 PM According to Heath one of his tests was running submerged in a bucket of water, IIRC 2 months under water was period of the test.
I've had mine submerged by water before, and constantly splashed with rain/slush/snow (as i plow) (for those who worry about thermal shock).
Never a stall, Not once.

Mine has a factory aluminum skid plate. Probably not thick enough to be a cooler though.
