: Where to Buy Oil
05DMAX 10-03-2004, 03:04 PM I just went around and looked at the auto parts stores near me and none of them really have a 15W-40 or 5W-40 diesel motor oil. Ive heard about Mobil 1 Delvac but ive never seen it in stores. I think I want to switch to either Rotella T (its synthetic right?) or Mobil 1 Delvac once its broken in. Is there somewhere that I can buy these oils online?? Where does everyone else get there oils?
Also, what is a good "dino" oil to use during break in?
One more question, Does Rottella T or Mobil 1 Delvac come in 5W-40?
Thanks
jholly 10-03-2004, 03:28 PM Mobil Truck and SUV oil (rebadged Delvac), Rotella both dino and T, and Delo 400 can all be bought at Wally World. I have seen Mobil 1300 (?), stuff in the black bottle, there also.
Problem with ordering online is the cost of shipping, which can exceed the cost of the oil. Some will ship for free if
you buy $250.
Jim
Haven't looked for the Mobile Truck and SUV or Delvac 1 yet since I'm not ready for it, but I got the Delvac 1300 dino 15W-40 at WalMart.
marcdeluca 10-03-2004, 08:42 PM If you are interested in Amsoil, you can go to their website and set yourself up as a preferred customer. You then buy at the same price as the dealers. You do have shipping to pay, but I always order quite a bit at a time to bring shipping down. As far as break-in oil, I would just leave the factory oil in for that. Amsoil also has several different weights of the diesel grade oil.

I was going to put amsoil in until I was told its not API certified.
BTW, thanks for the other replies, just went and looked at Wal-Mart (kinda a drive from where I live, which is weird since i live in downtown Columbus) and they had the Rottella T 15W-40, Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40, and Mobil Delvac 15W-40 (Non synthetic). Didnt see the Mobil 1 delvac 5W-40 (synthetic). I went ahead and bought 3 gallons of the Rottella T 15W-40 for the first oil change to make sure its all broken in and then Im gonna switch to synthetic, either Rottella T synthetic 5W-40 or Mobil 1 delvac 5W-40 or amsoil (but i dont think amsoil is API certified and I dont really want to use it if its not).

You won't see the Delvac at Wally World. What you will see is Mobil 1 Truck and Suv oil. There has been a disscussion on this site, and the quart bottles of Truck and SUV oil is rebadged Delvac.

close, but no kewpie doll. You will note that there is no API star on the front of the bottle and if would look at the back of the bottle there is no api rating. The only oil AMSOIL has that is api rated in PCO 15W-40, which is CI-4 rated, and the XL-7500 line. They *claim* an api rating for this oil. You may check this out at the api site (http://eolcs.api.org)

jbjackson13 10-04-2004, 11:48 AM How many miles should I put on a new DMAX before switching to a synthetic?? What is the best synthetic to use??

About how many miles, I personally will be doing my first oil change at about 1000 miles and i'm gonna use Rotella T 15W-40 (non synthetic). Then Ill prob do the second change at 3000 or 4000 miles and switch to synthetic, probably going to use Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 or Mobil 1 Delvac synthetic 5W-40. Around 3000 or 4000 miles it should be broken in for the most part and plus going into winter Im gonna want the synthetic 5W-40 to help out with cold starts. My $.02Edited by: 05DMAX
deadfurrow 10-04-2004, 02:01 PM Where does everyone else get there oils?
Since you live in Columbus, & since you're thinking about using Delvac 1, the logical place for you to get your oil is here (http://www.avlube.com). Avlubricants is a supporting vendor on this site, & they're in Groveport, so it wouldn't be too hard for you to drive there & save on shipping.

Thanks
Well I did the search for the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil yesterday since my Jeep needs an LOF and I wanted to use the same oil I plan on putting in the Dmax.
I looked at quite a few places with no luck but finally found it at Checker of all places. It's $4.99 a quart which is about the going rate and since it's rebadged Delvac 1, it's also the 5W-40 weight.
So the Truck and SUV can be had by looking around, Delvac 1 is no where to be seen around here that I'm aware of...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
Stelth450 10-06-2004, 10:40 PM Sometimes I just don't understand you guys.....you go out and spend 40+ grand on a truck and then you go and put the cheapest darn oil in it that you can find. Delvac1 can easily be found at your local dealer.....as well as Goodwrench 15W40 non synthetic for guys that are still breaking theres in.
There's nothing cheap about the oils being discussed. The question is primarily where to find it. Delvac 1 is NOT common in most places and certainly no dealer I've ever seen. The Rotella T is quite a bit easier to find around here than even the Mobile 1 Truck and SUV, aka Delvac 1.
Maybe you ought to read the posts a little more carefully before you offer condescending input...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif
Stelth450 10-07-2004, 10:11 AM I just can't resist responding to that last post. OK Zeeb, when was the last time you contacted your dealer to see if they had Delvac1 or Goodwrench 15W40. Because I live here in Kansas and I always thought we were a little bit in the stone ages, but obviously Utah must be if no dealers close by have Goodwrench oil or Delvac1. Every dealer in this area has both those oils mentioned earlier, and, I was reading the posts, maybe you weren't. The people in this thread were saying that they checked there local parts stores and Walmarts. Not one post said anything about checking a dealership. And if the town has a Walmart I can pretty much guarantee that the town also has a GM Dealer. I have yet to be in a town yet that doesn't.
No my stealer does not have Delvac 1, nor does any one of them I've been into around here. As for Goodwrench oil, I suppose if it had been mentioned in the original question, someone might have suggested the stealer option. For dino I prefer Delvac 1300 15W-40 which is available at WalMart but NOT GM dealers here.
I stand by my original observation.
jbplock 10-07-2004, 08:35 PM If there is a CAT dealer nearby CAT DEO 5W40 synthetic is also Re-badged DELVAC-1.
Stelth450 10-07-2004, 08:46 PM Alright Zeeb, we could go back and forth on this for the next year. I will admit I stand corrected. I am shocked to hear that the dealers back there don't carry any GM oil. By GM oil I mean that both Delvac1 and of course Goodwrench 15W40 have GM part numbers. Tell your dealers or stealers like most of you like to call them to get with the program. I really didn't mean to come off the way my post sounded, I am a GM Parts Manager and have been in the business now for 18 years, I guess my post was more about how alot and I mean alot of people will spend a heck of a lot of money on a vehicle, then when it comes time to change the oil....they all of a sudden get real cheap with the maintenance. As far as your "observation", I will tell you this....I read every post on this forum quite thoroughly and have learned alot by doing so. I am real sorry if I offended anyone or got under anyones skin, but maybe I took the context of this thread differently than you took it.
SaguaroKid 10-07-2004, 09:28 PM I might be a little paranoid but, ( just my opinion ) when I get a new truck ( it may have 10 - 20 miles on it ) I test drive it and if I want it I have them throw in a free oil change before I take it home. They kinda look at me funny because of the extreme low miles ( under 50 miles ) on it. But, I question the cleanlyness of getting all the machining shavings, chips or anything else that may not get cleaned out during the assembly process at the factory. Just me...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
