: Think I blew turbo

I was driving along at 90 or so today when I suddenly lost power. I had a really hard time getting any boost on my gauge but could get a little, maybe 3 to 5 lbs or so and no power even with a tune. I didn't hear anything at all when it happened, just noticed a lack of power. I drove a few miles to where I was going after I stopped and listened but couldn't hear anything. After a hour and a half I went out and started it. I didn't hear anything at that point. So I took the intake off of the turbo to see what I could see. When we started the truck the turbo wheel looked like it started normal and when we shut it off it took a few seconds for it to stop so I don't think it is hitting anywhere. Then after that I started it was going to go drive it and then we started noticing that there was a faint rattle coming from the turbo and bellhousing area, I don't think that somebody who doesn't know duramax's would notice but it was definitely there. The rattle continued the rest of the night when i would start it to load and unload off the trailer. Once home I went out on the road and still no power or boost.
I think turbo but the wheel looks good. I am lost as to what else it would be.
Thanks Kevin

Did you check all the plumbing from the turbo and intercooler? Sometimes one of the rubber hoses will pop off. One could have split. I would check all of that out.

I did check the boots first, just forgot to mention it.

If a turbo let loose it would scare the shat out of ya I KNOW ! Sounds to me like you may be getting injector failure ! Whens the last time the fuel filter was changed ! Id start there ! Maybe a FICM issue too

I agree with C.A.P. When my turbo blew it was like a bomb going off.

20 gauge shotgun going off under the hood. Followed by black smoke, and white smoke....

Changed the filters on my fass and the stock filter and nothing changed, still no boost.

Take intake off of turbo, remove 3 screws on the aluminum snout. The check turbo for endplay, and any side to side movement.

Just a shot in the dark, but is your boost gauge hose still hooked up securely?

also pull the drive side intercooler pipe.... if you did you are likly to suck the oil into the CAC..... you will need to pop the ffender liner off as well to get to it easly

The noise you are hearing is what I would try to isolate first. I'd watch trying to put too much boost on it before you find out where it coming from.
I'd Data log the rail pressure and check commanded and actual. Any unusal smoke?. Your running big injectors as I recall. Bal rates ok? I've seen your truck in action and the turbo has seen some good times. Any codes? If your not seeing gobs of smoke with those injectors and low boost, i'd look in the fuel dept. The noise? Wish I could help. Good luck.

Yeah, the noise is what I am most worried about. It keeps getting more and more noticeable. Im starting to think it is definitely the turbo. I did and do have my stock injectors back in. No codes either.

I've got a buddy at the local dealership and think whatever it is will get warranty work.
