Anybody have trouble going into 4X4 low range, I followed the instructions in the manual, but it does not engage every time. The only thing I can think of , is when we picked up the truck it had about 130 miles/220 kilometers on it. Maybe some one on a test drive tried the 4X4 low range.

It can be tricky to do it on some trucks. I method that has always
worked for me is to put truck in neutral and coast to stop with brake,
place in park and while keeping brakes applied shift to low
range. SOme luck can be had at 3 MPH or so in neutral too.

The truck must be moving between 1-3 mph and it will pop in easy every time. Trans in neutral

Mine will not go into 4 Lo unless it is moving and in neutral as Joey D stated.

When I first got my truck, I could not get it to engage 4 lo. Thru trial and error, I happen to be on a slight downhill grade and tried it. I was rolling real slow and hit the button with the trans in neutral. The light flashed a few times and then there was a bang when it engaged. Every since then, it has worked correctly every time I try it. I think something may have been bound up from installation.
I have since tried it every couple of weeks or so to make sure it will engage when I really need it.

Mine works either way but I usually use the standing still method listed above.

New, I had to have mine rolling slightly in N to get it to engage. Now,
after many in and outs, it drops right in when I am standing still.
Excercise it a bit and get used to it before you need it and you will
be OK. That actually goes for the whole 4x4 system. Using it
about once a month goes a long way towards it working when you really
need it.

When you use the still method, you have to make sure the drive line is
"unloaded" of all torque (input and static) before you shift.

Thanks guys (and girls if applicable) I own a farm, so I think I will take "Big Max" out for some "exercise".

(Edit) During exercise tried every suggestion to engage low range, truck is very reluctant to go in to low. lots of clunking, a bit of crunching, truck really jumps when shifting from drive to reverse, does not sound to good, very noisy. When your are finally in low, it works fine.Edited by: Pappajo
