Anybody having paint problems, I've had my truck four weeks, and the paint is chipping off in three places, and every time you touch the truck you end up with a mark. It is driving me crazy.

Pappajo, look on the drivers side door and get me the month it was built and build location. Are your paint problems on the hood and roof? We had a severe quality crash in our paint department and I was certain at the time that there were going to be trucks that made it out of the plant before the problem would surface.

Pappajo, Welcome to the Place!

There were a lot of people complaining of thin and chipping paint posting quite a few months ago. Do a search of the threads, you'll come upon them. Its a very common problem. Seems the GM base/clear paint system is very poor, and isn't all its cracked up to be. (no pun intended)

I myself have a high number of chips on the rockers, and I always seem to find another chip from a highway stone hit somewhere. I just keep the little bottle of touch up handy. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif

Mine should be in this week, and it sound like it might be a good idea to invest in some of the clear plastic chip guards that 3M makes for the rocker panels, I sure hope this isn't going to turn into the old paint delamination that many GM owners suffered with including myself back in the late 80s and early 90s

MIne is the same build too. Noticed some chips around the rocker panel about where my feet would hit getting in and out. Was wondering what I had on my boots that would cause it to chip that easy. Thought the bed was chipping awful easy too. Although I am not too easy on it. Bought it to haul with. May be my fault so am not going to blame GM yet but will be keeping a close eye on it. Wonder if I could get them to rhino line the bed instead of painting it if they are the reason for it? Just thinking out loud.

Well...here's the deal guys! I work at Pontiac Assembly Center in the chassis department where all the suspension and steering is installed. We build Extended Cab and Standard Cab, LB and SB, 1/2 ton all the way up to 1 ton, 3600 series trucks. The 3600 series are the super HD frames with aftermarket beds and boxes.

About the time we started building the 04.5's (Jan-Feb time-frame), we had a fire in paint shop upstairs where the ELPO dunk tank is. ELPO is the tank that the bodies are dunked in after the acid dip to clean the metal. ELPO is like the primer coat and corrosion sealer. When the sprinklers went off, it contaminated the ELPO tank. I won't make accusations as to who was at fault for not saying something about the contamination, but a few supervisors were fired because of it. Anyway...production continued! Well...when those trucks started hitting the ovens after being painted, the paint on the hoods and roofs was blistering. They sent them to repair and kept the line running. Well eventually they had to stop the line because of all the bodies that were stacked up at repair. We ended up scrapping nearly an entire shift of bodies (400+). I was convinced that some of those bodies would make it out of the plant before they blistered. I'm sure that GM will fix them! No worries there. Just the fact that you have to.

(On Edit)I know this doesn't help those of you who have CC's like me, with the chipping problems like I have also. But...I have done everything I can to stop it. Mudflaps, and deflector. My dually wheel wells are getting beat up bad. I'll be saying something soon to my dealer. Hoping to get a sizeable repair.

Hope this helps some!

Hey..... ya ......... sure I knew that......... boy am I a dummy... says that right on the door. Well if anybodies heard about problems in Flint I would appreciate hearing about it. Took it into the dealer today re transfer case not shifting to low, showed service manager the paint chips and marks that will not come off. He said HMMMMMMMM. I have got a 97 Astro Van with 200000 kilks with less paint chips.

I have an '03 CC and right after i bought it in Aug pf '03, i was washing it, and noticed that there was a spot on the roof that was gray. I will assume this was primer. I took it back to my dealer and he had is bodyshop repair it. My paint seems to lack a clear coat, it scratches very easily, and at this rate I will have to have the rockers repaited within a few yrs. Just my 2 cents.

I had the same problem when the truck was new. especially with dings on the hood. They seem to have stoped after 1-1/2 years of ownership.

I am wondering if the paint finally cured and hardened?

Sounds like typical GM paint... My Camaro scratches really easily and my 1990 1500 was one of those old flakers that got repainted under that class action suit. My friends F-350 got hit on the tailgate and scratched. I was amazed at how many layers that had. Not sure if the whole truck is like that, but when I saw that my first thoughts were I wonder what that would look like if it were a GM. Also, I would think that if you are missing a clear coat, it would not be shiney In conclusion, GM paint needs to be improved!
