All,

Buying an 04 2500 with LLY from Idaho (private seller). Vehicle has 3800 miles. Got it for much better than asking price. Picking it up in a few days. Main concern is the Edge Juice/Attitude install. OLDMAN told me to be carefull as the tranny might be hammered. Owner said I'm welcome to drive it all over before handing over the cash. Anything to look for?

Thanks, Marbee

You'd have a hard time doing any significant damage in 3800 miles with the edge. Unless you really hammered on it hard all the time. I wouldn't worry about it. Especially if he is older and not a young punk kid.

On the test drive put it in level 4, the low fuel to 4 and defuel 4-5 shift only and run it and see if it limps the tranny.

If it has been run hard it should limp the tranny in level 4.

The shifts won't be very good but u will have an idea on the trans.

BTW 60 mph will come very fast.

I can't even get mine to limp in level 5. Not that i am complaining. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Being that it does not have the YF5 California emissions the truck may not be legal for registeration in CA. I would check w/ DMV before doing anything.

I'll second what y2kboti mentions. The CA DMV will not register the vehicle in CA with only 3800 miles on it (unless it is equipped with California emissions). Be very careful and research the topic.

From the CA DMV site:
What should a California resident look for when buying a new vehicle from another state?
California residents are prohibited from importing, purchasing, or leasing a new vehicle from another state, unless the vehicle was manufactured for sale in California and the Environmental Protection Agency label certifies the vehicle has California smog equipment. California considers a new vehicle to be any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time it is purchased or aquired.

Buy it, drive it to Texas, then come home. You should have the required miles on it by then.

Keep in mind that the MSRP is not what you really pay for a California truck. I thought about going out of state to buy, then realized I wasn't saving much $$$. My MSRP was $49k, but out the door ended up being ~$42k.

I doubt there is significant damage done to the Allison, as the LLY Edge is only a few months old.

PS - The DMV does not normally check the mileage. They go by the bill of sale. Should the BOS say a larger number than what is really on the odo, it could save a bunch of hassle.

Actually they do. I just registered an out of state car and the DMV had a dude go out and check the VIN, plate number, milage and a few other things. Perhaps with an in state transfer they don't check.

All, Thanks VERY much for the heads up on the "test drive" for the Edge. BTW, I'm military, living in CA, but not a resident. The truck will be licensed in WA, so I'm not sweating the whole deal. Thanks for the concern.

Appreciate your input!

U could buy my 04.5 w/ 6000 miles then when u got home it would be over 7500.

Plus lower price than $42k.

$42k for a used truck seems kinda high. Have you looked at the dealers for leftover 2004's? Incentives are really good right now, on 2004's. The stealer only wanted to give me $25,000 for my truck 2 weeks ago. I was looking to trade mine in for a 2005, but I wasn't going to take a hit on my current truck.
