Alright, Picked up my truck on tuesday, and I think Im starting to get used to the ZF. Ive never really driven a manual consistantly as a daily driver. I have few questions though. Sometimes when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and/or 3rd to 4th, it feels like the gear engages "rough", kinda like a little gear clash, but not enough to hear it, just feel it through the shifter. It doesnt happen all the time, and when it does its usually on higher RPM shifts. Am I doing something wrong? I was thinking it might go away once it gets more broken in.

Also, sometimes when I step on the clutch pedal, especially at lower speeds (like in 1st or 2nd coming to a stop), I get a knocking sound. I hear it sometimes when I shift from 2nd to 3rd also. What exactly makes this noise? Is it bad? I am in the local volunteer fire dept and we have a F-350 dually ford powerstroke 6-speed squad that ive heard make the same sound.

Sorry, kinda new to driving stick all the time and really new to the ZF.

My tranny also shifts rough once and while from 3 to 4. The knocking sounds can be the Dual Mass Flywheel clanging around. Mine also did that before I went to a single. I'm also a firefighter/ EMT. Good luck.

I have always had the same sounds that you describe. I dont think theres anything wrong.

If you want it to keep quiet, make a habit of putting the lever in
neutral as soon as you push in the clutch with the intent to
coast. In other words, dont have it in gear with the clutch in
(unless youre stopped)

Youll learn how to drive it, it just takes a little while. As far
as I am concerned, this is a very difficult transmission to drive
smoothly/quietly. But you adjust to it.

Give it a few thousand miles before getting too worried. It takes a while to loosen up. Mine finally broke in good after 15K. If you have any need for 1st use it now. Mine was very difficult until I purposely used it.
