Ok Astroflex seems to be the remote starter of choice around here. I did find a dealer that carries them locally. Here's my questions.

They call the model QS-3, lists at $275 plus I need according to them 2 additional modules one for $80 and one for $50. It has 2 transmitters that replace my current ones and 1000ft range.

From questioning them it seems that it reads voltage from the alternator to know when it's running. The second needed module is the one that fires the glow plugs then starts a timer before cranking the engine.

Is this how these normally work, or does Astro have a specific module that turns the engine after the glow plug light goes out?

If they are all timer based after firing the glow plugs how long should it be set for?

This is something I've decided to treat myself to and since it's starting to cool off here in WI I'd like to get this done soon.

Is $400 installed for this model seem inline for this particular model?

Thanks in advance

QS-3 makes no sense. Astro start models are:
803 - cheaper 3 button 1000ft range, 1 way model
1105 - 5 button remote 2000 ft range, 1 way model
2106xr -6 button remote 2000ft range, 1 way model additional features (built in door lock relays etc)
3106 - 2-6 button remotes, 2000ft range, 1 way model plus alarm
4204 - 1-4 button remote, 2000ft range, 2 way model
5204 - 1-4 button 1-6 button, 2000ft range, 2 way model with alarm
and soon 2205- 1 6button, 2000ft range, 2 way model configurable with or without alarm. Cheaper then 4204 and 5204 and non LCD remote.

By the sounds of this they are not talking about astro start. Astro start has built in glow plug functions and tach sensing etc. Voltage increase will not work on the duramax because the glow plugs requrie too much power at startup. Astro start senses off of the 'tach' wire which is what drives your tachometer guage. 100% acurate and the only way to go.

Timing based models are no good. Go with a unit that senses off of the wait to start light. That way there is no chance for errror.

There will be one or two external modules requried door locks and passlock II security bypass.

I tried shooting you off a PM but your box is full. Anyhow my experience with electrical is all above 200volts(I'm in the robotics industry).

Anyhow these are astro units(american TV is listed as a vendor zip code 53045)

Needless to say, I'm not afraid of a DIY project, and in most cases since it is my truck I'd probably do a better job than most install shops.

So I guess at this point I need to find a kit and just do it myself. hopefully it isn't too daunting of a project.
