I might consider heading to the wreckin' yard and finding a late model TBI setup. They are rock solid, almost no maintenance, and you might even pick up a mpg or two and some grunt. The conversion would cost more than 280 bucks though. You'd need the brains, TBI and manifold, MAF and maybe the O2 sensor.

Sounds like a lot of work for an old Caprice HH. Maybe if it was a Camaro or truck, it would be worth the swap.

Those rebuilt carbs from the autoparts stores are pretty reliable. I've used a couple for carbs I was having problems with. Direct drop in, few adjustments needed. The best thing would be to find an old timer that knows how to work on those old Q-Jets, they could have your car running top notch in seconds.

Go with the recon. quadrajet or go edelbrock for easy set up and adjustments.

if you have emission testing there, get the reman qjet. The 84's were feedback carburators, you cant just slap on an edelbroc and go,it needs to see TPS signal for timing and has a mixture control solenoid for adjusting fuel mixture for better mpg.

Good 'ol CCC (Computer Controled Carberator), what a PITA.

The old CCC quads are simple, biggest problem with them is the TPS goes haywire and you have to pull the top to change it

Whats wrong with the old one? If possible repairing the old one would be cheaper and better. I have had problems with rebuild ones from the parts stores I think they got 5TH graders doing the work for them. The hardest part of the rebuild is adjusting it. If you decide to do the swap with edelbrock get a early version HEI distributor with vacuum advance and you will be set.

If the choke is stuck closed (or close to being closed) there's a linkage piece that prevents the secondaries fron opening... the choke is a simple electric part... start engine and see if there's power to choke w/test light, if not unhook wire and retest, if still no light there's a power problem, if so replace electric part, if no light hooked up then there's a power problem also

If there's power make sure screws(or rivets) holding choke coil (cover) are tight... a lot of times there's a simple ground problem that prevents them from working, it grounds through the aluminum housing

I'm seeing more and more of these coming in with the plastic cam that pulls the fuel rods up on the secondarys broken. Then anytime the secondarys open the engine lays down from lack of fuel.

The Quadrajet is a really simple carb. You could buy a carb kit and a couple cans of carb cleaner and rebuild that carb in about half an hour. They're very, very simple. The computer controls aren't too hard to deal with, either. If it were me I'd pull that carb and see if I could fix it.

EDIT: All right... Now I see page two.

This is right on. Take a look at it... I'm guessing it's a pretty simple problem.
