I guess it would help some airflow. Maybe a good place for the plug on the block heater. Am I missing some purposes here? Also I dont have as much shroud on my driver side as I do my passenger...normal?

The pipe across in there is the engine oil cooler. On trucks with gas engines that had the optional oil cooler,(very rare) they also used the bumper with the holes so I would guess it is the only reason.

Foot holds for working in engine bay http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif no other purpose, was thinking on getting a 6.5 bumper for my 4.3L gasser so I'd have them there also

That's another reason for the bigger welded bumpers. It's a platform to stand on.

Yep, without them it would be almost impossible to work on. Never gave the GM engineers credit for this, I figured it to be an accident of engineering.

i have lights in the holes so i have to stand on the tow hooks.

They are for extra airflow to the radiator on diesels. Blocking them with accessories isn't a good idea.

I hope everyone realizes the foot holds was a tongue in cheek remark, holes are for extra cooing flow, if you look in them there is also a plastic air dam to direct air flow that snap in place, when using bumper as foot hold make sure the dams don't get dislodged. Edited by: Turbine Doc

GM or junkyard probably only place, maybe you could make some out of some sheet metal or luan panel wrapped in fiberglass mat. Here are a couple of pics what they look like.

probably most important for air flow from what I see it to fill in the gap, so the air does not just flow out of the bottom of the bumper, what you are seening through mine is the "Tank" of my IC

yeah that is how mine looks. the guy that had my truck before me must have taken them off and never put them back on.

TD,

Have you checked for a bird carcass in your radiator? From the looks of that second to last picture, you may have prematurely ended the life of one of God's creatures.
