: Sudden or gradual loss of MPG?
problemchild 10-01-2004, 11:46 AM I was just wondering if any other people have seen this happen? I remember reading posts about this aprox. one year ago.
My truck new got 20.7 mpg fwy and 17 town.
Now with 34k miles I get 9-11 town and 14 fwy.
I put my stock tires back on and had almost no change.
With diesel prices at 2.25 gallon I am really discouraged.
Diesel Power 10-01-2004, 12:36 PM Mine has basically been the same... i get 14-15 all the time...
gearhead 10-01-2004, 12:39 PM only change is I have duels on now and I like to here them http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley20.gif
OC_DMAX 10-01-2004, 12:45 PM 15 mpg around town, 19 mpg on the highway. Very consistent.
chuntag95 10-01-2004, 12:53 PM 15 mpg in town and 18 on the highway. Was a little better before the 265s.
blnagel 10-01-2004, 02:34 PM I am running 17.3 in interstate going 75 and 16 going 81 with 315s on 17" rims. Town is the around 12-13 but I lay into her a bit.

1BADDMAX 10-01-2004, 02:39 PM I get about 18-19 mpg around town. On a trip to Arkansas last week (750 miles one way) I got 21mpg. I didn't calculate mileage on the way back. The Predator @ 40HP has actually improved mileage. The best I've ever got was 24mpg, but that was stock tires and running the speed limit (65mph). I'll never see that again. I think it was a fluke.
mightyvh 10-01-2004, 03:08 PM PC, when I first got my truck (7/2002) I was getting 15-16 around town and the best I got (almost all freeway and no towing) was just under 20. Around the beginning 2003 I noticed it had dropped between 1 and 2 MPG's - I started avg. 12-14 around town and it's harder to say on the freeway. Generally when I'm all freeway I'm towing and I'll get 15-17 ish. Does anybody know when Calif started to use this ultra low sulfur diesel......I use an additive but I always seem to run better when I have Utah fuel.
BRUCE 10-01-2004, 04:25 PM 04 dur/ally cc sb 2WD, 18.5 -19 everyday 21highway not towing. Going to Maine next week and will have some towing figures.
GMC2500HD 10-01-2004, 06:10 PM I have been getting about 20-23 on the highway and about 16-18 running around town.. I guess cause I try to keep my foot out of it. That might help.....

California has "low sulfur" diesel fuel. This began in the early 1990's. The one exception (that I know of) to this is ARCO, which actually markets an "ultra low sulfur" diesel fuel. By June of 2006, we will all be using an "ultra low sulfur" diesel fuel.
The Cetane Index of a typical California diesel fuel is greater than 50. This far exceeds the national average of 45. If anything, you should be getting better mileage in California than in Utah. Continue to use the additive for the sake of fuel lubricity.Edited by: OC_DMAX
TheBac 10-01-2004, 09:17 PM I get combined mileage around 17 pretty much every tank. If I could ever keep my blasted foot out of it, I'd probably get 19. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif The truck is just too much fun not to, though. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

burkm 10-01-2004, 11:12 PM mine went down from 20 hwy/18 in town when new to 18 hwy/15 town with 36,xxx miles. Nothing wrong with the truck. It's my right foot, egde on level 3 and 265s. But I'm smiling all the way.
Idle_Chatter 10-02-2004, 08:57 AM I voted decrease. My truck always got great mileage, and for the first 20,000 or so it was showing a gradually increasing trend. Last year it sort of suddenly lost about 2 mpg across the board and my overall mileage of 18.5 mpg dropped pretty quickly to 17. I wasn't pleased, and wrote it off as just normal wear and tear. I had also reduced my numbers and frequencies of long highway trips and was driving mostly stop and go and short commutes. When I went over to Kennedy's for the June get together, I was pleased to clock a couple of 20 mpg highway tanks. My recent 4,000 mile roundtrip to Texas via Florida was in the mid 14s, but I was towing my 6x6x12 box trailer the whole way, so that wasn't so bad. At 92,600 miles, I can't really complain about reliability, performance or economy.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
JEBar 10-02-2004, 09:04 AM with the price of fuel going through the roof, I've been deliberately trying to drive my 3500 to see just how high mileage my truck can achieve ... when I do, on my daily drive (to and from work just under 50 miles, mix of city/country) I get 17+mpg ... when I drive normal (for me) on the same drive it drops to 15+ ... have found that speed is a major enemy of my truck getting good fuel mileage, if I keep her just over 1500 rpm (50-55 mph) she gets her best mileage, the faster I go above that the more rapidly the mileage drops ... run her over 2,000 rpm and she really takes a dive .. my truck is an early '02 with '01 injectors, 75,000+ miles to date without any injector issues (however, am very happy to have the 200,000 mile extended warranty letter from GM in the glove box), only thing ever done to her engine has been to plug in a Juice Box which I always run on the 60 hp setting

drdave 10-05-2004, 11:17 PM ProblemChild:
We saw the same with our 2003 D/A 2500HD 18 mpg down to 15, then down to 12... turns out it was the injectors... had vehicle in shop for 14 days while I bitched and moaned until new injectors arrived. Got the truck back on a Tuesday, drove it hard up the mountain - more power, less fuel - everything seems to be Ok.
Of course Friday morning the engine seized - TOTALLY....but thats another story in progess... back in the shop (different Dealer this time) looking for another trcuk to buy....

Gruber 10-06-2004, 01:00 PM No change here. I have 16k on my 04Lb7 Dually 4X4. I drive around 70-75 MPH when I can. I ran the a/c all summer. Empty I get 15mpg. Camper only 11.7-12.7...Camper and boat 9.7-10.7. I tried the 2000 rpm towing and I didn't see any improvement although I must admit it was hard to keep it at 65mph. Initially I was a little dissappointed in the milage but compared to the 454CI crewcabs I've owned this is awesome. I'm curious if anyone with the 3500 4X4 is doing better. Note: I have no enhancements on my engine except the exhaust and no kitty.....
