Has anyone tried these for their ZF-6?

Sure, I tried a couple of them (it is the stock flywheel that comes in our trucks). http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

I thought LUK was only aftermarket? I thought the flywheel in the ZF-6 was made by GM?

Not much is made by any of the big 3 anymore. GM has engineers that develope specifications, participate in vendor selection, test, and resolve issues, but the actual manufacturing is done by suppliers for many parts -- as it is for the Duramax flywheels.

LUK makes the flywheel, clutch disk, and pressure plate for GM. I checked the ones we pulled out two weeks ago. You would not believe how discolored the plates were from slippage. The disk on the flywheel side was almost completely gone and on both sides cracked and fallin apart (plates also had cracks and pitts).

Luk stuff is the same as stock, they make all kinds of clutches for the big 3. I have not been happy with it on my GM since my trans swap and wish I had never put it in my Ford. The Ford original clutch I pulled out had a Ford symbol and a Luk symbol both stamped into the pressure plate. I suggest you try to find something else for the ZF before you get another Luk.

Semi-crazy or anyone,

Any suggestions for replacements?

Mike

Let me justify the statement; This is a question I'd placed on another Diesel Web Site.

"After the replacement of my Transfer case the service manager commented that the transmission shifted great and that I must be shifting without the clutch. Well I DO use the clutch and never thought of not using it. So, for a period I did some shifting without the clutch and although I did pretty good, I would sometimes make it grind and once in a while it would jerk the whole truck when it would go into gear, this, with a 36 ft camper. So I started using the clutch again.

But now I have a noise I’m concerned about. If I delay pushing the clutch in (while coasting to a stop light) I get an awful “growling” sound. Same sound if I lug the engine in a higher gear. This sound only came about after the “no clutch” shifting.

I don’t lug the engine (at least I don’t think I do) but at times I may wait too long to engage the clutch. Have I hurt my ZF-6 and wasn’t there a post a few years ago about a re-occuring internal failure in this transmission?

Mike

PS AAMCO wants $1,200 to R&R and rebuild.

PS2 Wasn’t there a business in South Bend IN that dealt in replacements?"

Well CPMac, makes both a single and a dual setup with a new SMF and it sounds to be a pretty good kit. If you seach through some posts below you can read about the install of his kits.

There are a couple other places out there, like so...
www.drivetrain.com/<WBR>heavydutyclutch.html (http://www.drivetrain.com/heavydutyclutch.html)

But, I do not have a D-max, so hopefully some other people can chime in with some more sources.

Max;
Given how weak the DMF and clutch are my guess is that your problem has nothing to do with the tranny and is a flywheel problem. Call CPMac and discuss with him. I put a dual disc amd SMF kit on and talk about stout!! Mine rattles if I don't disengage the clutch when I slow down . .. very normal. . . . my old F250 gasser did the same thing.

I would bet on the DMF, I doubt it's the tranny. Mine made the same growling noise just before pushing the clutch and also under full throttle, full boost in 4th, 5th, & 6th before putting in the CPMac setup. Doesn't do it anymore... Talk to Craig, he'll fix you up with what you need. I have Craig's single disc setup and it works great.

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the info guys. OK, I'm gonna ask a "Clutch Stupid" question... What's ment by Single and Dual Disk? And what's wrong with the Dual Mass concept? And should I go with CPMac's setup are there going to be any more existing "weak links" to contend with?

I use my truck to haul trailers and make money. I don't smoke'm nor run the quater mile. It's a truck that happens to pay for it's self.

Mike
