After two days of ownership and 600+ miles here are my
observations. Keep in mind this is my first diesel and I had a
1998 5.7 1500 gasser.

<ul>
Truck is built sound and motor runs strong. No rattles as
of yet (did have a bent steering shaft problem from the
factory). Rides a little stiff - but what do you expect from
stock tires on a 3/4 ton truck.
<ul>
GM cheaped out on interior (as has been stated many times
here). More plastic, no underhood light, no visor vanity mirror
lights, no glove box lights, no under dash lights. Floor mats
look like they belong in a work - truck model.
<ul>
4 wheel disc brake system seems to provide ample smooth braking.
<ul>
Transmission shift is smooth and strong. Takes a little
getting used to. First gear is a slug. Reverse feels like your
driving a tractor http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif. Grading braking takes some getting used to but you gotta love the "big-rig" downshift sounds in T/H modehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif.
<ul>
Fit &amp; finish appear to be good.
<ul>
Motor runs strong. As of yet, no rough idle / smoke
problems. Turbo spool takes some getting used to. Kind of
slugish until the spool-up then.....HOLD ON! Much more power than
I am used to. What a rocket!
<ul>
Oil pressure (factory dino oil) = 70+ psi on initial cold
start. Slightly below 60psi when hot at 2000 RPM. Below
2000 RPM's varies from 30 - 60 PSI.
<ul>
Engine temp = Never moved off of 210 degrees F after warm-up (60 degree F outside temps).
<ul>
Trans. Temp = stayed just below 150 degrees F empty and pulling (mostly flat land with a 24' camper).
<ul>
Fuel mileage: Hand calculated - even used a calculatorhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif (2 tank fulls #2 diesel with Stanadyne Performance)

270 Miles 90% freeway at 75 MPH (mostly flat) 17MPG
270 miles 90% freeway pulling 24' camper (mostly flat - return trip of route taken in item #1) 60-65mph 14.3 MPG.
All in all - a very nice truck!!

I am about 600+ miles too and have almost identical observations as far as :Oil PSI, Engine Temp and Trans Temp.

MPG according to DIC says 16.8-16.9 mostly highway

Lets keep updating this thread on the observations of the 05' D/A cuz some of the reports I have heard on the 04.5 LLY'S overheating have me a little concerned. I have not encountered any rough idle or smoke conditions either.

I should have a report on towing my 5er soon. Oh ya congrats on your D/A !

Mostly same observations with mine. First tank mixed driving city /
highway 16 miles/gallon. Not bad for a brand new big rig like this.
Lots of power. I find the first gear not that bad. It shifts after half
a second in second gear anyway. Ride very bouncy, thats my
only problem so far. XM Radio sounds like a dream, don't know what the
6 disk changer will be ever used for! Fit and finish good, not like
Toyota but reasonable close. Seems better than my Avalanche which I
traded but also the Av was good. Less features like no adjustable
pedals, no vanity mirrors etc. don't have any idea why? Driving is not
easy when the road is wet, the rear end is sliding around easily, no
comparison to the Av here (unfortunately), but I am hoping with good
tires that will improve. Laying under the truck everything looks build
also good and very strong. Happy to have waited that long to get the
right truck in the right color (midnight blue metallic).

I'm at 1200 miles. Agree with all the general observations. Switching to
Bilsteins reduced the bounce noticably. My primary concern right now is
fuel mileage. I've gotten 17mpg in mixed with a highway bias. I got
16mpg pulling a 4500lb car+trailer and returning with a 2500lb trailer on
a 300 mile run. Unfortunately in the heavy stop and go I deal with around
town, I seem to hover around 11mpg. I haven't had a chance on the past
2 tanks to get some long highway runs in to see if I move back into the
17-18mpg range.

On the tow run, the temp ranged between 95 and 102 degrees outside.
Engine temp stayed parkeded on 210. Tranny temp was around 190.
Inside temp a comfy 68. Everything as I would want it to be.:-)

On the floor matts, I personally like the big rubber matts. I didn't mind
climbing into the cab at the dump with muddy shoes. I really will like
them when the family climbs in the cab with snow covered boots.Edited by: driveawedge

1800 miles 05 chev da lt, pulling a tandem axle motorcycle trailer. mileage 11 to 12 at aprox 80 mph. at little to no pull injection system makes a loud pinging noise. quite noticable and ogjectional. goes away under load or slowing down, do not know if edge/***. contributing. much turbo lag, then hang on. i thing it will be a great truck depending on longivity.

Ride very bouncy, thats my only problem so far.

My ride was very bouncy also. On the recommendation of other people here I lowered the rear tire pressure from dealer supplied 80psi to 50psi (unloaded). Left the fronts at 55psi which is what the door sticker calls for as the front load doesn't change much.

Haven't driven it yet to see the diff. but I'm guessing it will help alot as it did for others.

One mechanical problem so far. Very squeaky belt until the engine warms. Started at about 500 miles. Did some searching on this forum and 2004.5's had an issue with power steering brackets causing similar noise. I can't imagine that still being an issue though. Haven't spoke to the dealer yet.

At 1800 miles, truck drives and rides similar to 02, but is gutless. Have added green keys with 285's, but did not take additional turns on the bolts. Rides A LOT BETTER with the green keys - would not have believe it if I hadn't felt it with my own butt. Truck weighs in at about 9200 lbs with bumpers, winch, canopy, etc. Sure is a gutless wonder with poor fuel mileage - about 13 mpg average so for. Bilsteins and fuel filter coming. Except for the fact that the injectors are easier to replace on the LLY than the LB7, I'd rather have my 02 back, without the lift kit, and with green keys.

I'm glad that this is my first diesel. I like it - but sounds
like that's because I don't know what I've missed not having a LB7

I disagree on the floormats - I really like them. The rubber is real soft, they have a cool design, &amp; they cleanup easy.

XM &amp; Bose system are top notch &amp; better than anything available by a competitor.

Mileage not as good as expected - 8 mpg pulling 9,000lb 5'er; 14 mpg in town; 17 mpg highway.

Oil pressure - when hot &amp; at idle mine runs around 20 psi.

I've had my 05 almost 5 weeks now - have put 4200 miles on so
far. Onyx Black - LOVE IT. First diesel. You guys are
making me wonder if my DIC is jacked. I'm getting about 18.3
average MPH (all highway). If I run about 60 on back country
roads and drive like an old man it calc's over 20mpg on the DIC.
Gonna start manual calc's to validate the DIC.

Belt whine - I have noticed a squeak when idling - but traced it back
to the alternator pulley. Have not brought it to dealer's attention
yet. Only happens at idle.

I too like the floor mats - surprised on the lack of a hood light - but hey.. it's a diesel truck....

800 miles. Mine has the whine and started the infamous "tick"

funny noises and to stop worring about every little one. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

865 miles and all is well, except for the whine when Im decelling off the freeway. To me it sounds like the trans ?? I am at about 17.1 MPG cruising at 70-75 MPH Highay, very little city driving.

Oh what a feelin' !

Was on my way to work this am when the guy in the lane next to me kept
staring at me and trying to get up next to me. Thought to myself
- what's this knuckle-head want? Did I cut him off??? Finally
stop at a light and he about hits the car infront of him trying to get
even with me. He motions for me to roll the window down.
I'm thinking he doesn't want to shoot thru the glasshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif, but he starts asking about my truck!!

He has an older Cummins (that's Cummings to some of you folkshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) that he wants to get rid of for a DMax.

Light turned green. He says - "Nice Truck". I say "thanks"
and spool up the turbo and take off. Could still see him watching
me as I drove awayhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif.

Good feeling!!

Thought it was my tranny whining at decel, but come to find out that it is the power steering pump.

The tech said that he has replaced (several) power steering pumps on the 05 due to the whine and hard to turn steering. My pump is on B/O for at least a week. Thats telling me that they are replacing alot of pumps.

Service dept. was great and didn't make me sit there for hours on a Sat. to tell me to bring it back in after the B/O pump arives !

Are you setting it all like you want, then with the truck in park pressing and holding the #1 or #2 button in the truck on the drivers door until you hear two beeps?

I have never had any problem setting the seat/radio/ac/mirrors etc memory for #1 or #2

Now you have me wondering??? Being that this is my first diesel I am still learing what noises are "normal"

My '05 has a slight "whine" to it while accelerating and
decelerating. I can even hear it at slower speeds while
cruising. It is still present when I pop the trans into nuetral
so I don't think it is Allison related. It seems to change with RPM
changes. It sounds like a slight air whistle /radio buzz
combination. Is it just the intake of air or the turbo????
Or is it a P/S pump problem? Was your P/S pump noisy when
steering?

Reaper
10-11-2004, 09:31 PM
To answer your question skoryono2 the pump is noisy on the freeway at all RPM's and when turning only while the trans was engaged in gear, not coast mode because the RPM's are to low to make a whine.

To me it sounds like you are hearing your turbo. If the whine gets louder then maybe take it to your dealer to have a "look see" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

reaper, just read your ? edge is very user friendly. power is there. i am use to an 01 ford with 80hp superchip. lots of turbo sound which i miss, with ford, that truck would run 2 inches below the last posted mph on the speedo. the chev little slow from dead stop no boost. but runs great to 95mph thats it no more. going to have to get a programer i guess just dont know which one. had buyers remorse but the max is growing on me, i think it will be a great truck.
