Hey guys,

I'm still learning new stuff everyday about my truck. I got 77k miles on my truck and i was going to have the balance rate checked out on my injectors (don't want them going bad with a long drive coming up). Can i do this myself or is this something a dealer has to do? What tool could i use?

Thanks!
Matt

Need a predator, EFI Live, or a tech II. There may be others out there that can read the rates, or maybe someone on here lives near you and you can hook up.

Just a couple of suggestions.

I would also like to check my balance rates. 107K miles. Just curious to see what they are.

How much does a dealer typically charge for this service?

Is there anyone close to wichita, kansas that can get together with me and check the rates?

Just before the 36K-mile warranty was up I went to the dealer to have it checked. They charged the std. computer hook-up fee ($80?).

After about an hour they were done and gave me the programmed/actual fuel-rail pressures. When I brought that to their attention they seemed confused. The tech took the truck back and came back with a set of numbers that looked very good, very low and very consistent.

I wonder if the tech was taking those numbers with the truck in gear.

To this day I don't think I got my $$ worth for that service.

$80 is standard for an hour. Most dealers will charge you $40 minimum for anything that takes less than 30min. The balance rates can been done in about 2 min and the fuel rail pressure about the same, I believe. The injector special policy says to do a fuel rail pressure test to check the injectors. That is the test you want to ask for. You can have good balance rates and bad injectors.

Can you install a gauge on the pressure rail and check it yourself??, assuming one knows what is normal that is.

I believe...that you have to be able to command (Tech II) the rail presure and then see if it holds.

You can command the rail pressure up with the Tech II. You can watch it with EFI. Balance rates are also available via EFI live.

My GM shop charged me $35 to do a balance test on my truck. Took about 35 minutes for them to do it.

I think it is the balance rates and the return rates you are looking for...and no it is really not something you can do yourself....

Thanks for the time / price quote from a dealer. Now i got some knowledge i can go in with and argue with them.
