Thanks in advance for any answers, this is my first post in this forum.

I recently bought a new 04 Silverado DA and traded my 8.1 gmc with allison for it. I heard the duramax would beat the 8.1 in the quarter mile, but I don't think this duramax will. If I stomped on the gas from a dead stop w/ the 8.1, it would smoke the tires. If I try the same thing with the Dmax, the engine almost dies and takes a second or two before it picks up any momentum at all. Once the turbo starts to kick in, then it will really take off.

Is this normal, or is mine really doggy out of the hole? I haven't tried power braking it. I keep hearing and see pictures of duramax's smoking the tires, is this done by power braking?

P.S. I usually don't drive this way as I use the truck mainly for towing my fith wheel which it does very well.

Thanks,

Dave

Normal turbo lag.

Yes most of the tire smoking is by chiped trucks and/or power braking.

Mine has no problem squeeling the tires if you get on it, and it's completely stock. There is no hesitation or stalling.

Dave, my 01 is a dually AND completrely stock. I can leave black strips behind me if I get on it. But being 61 years young, I seldom do that(unless my wife is half asleep. Wakes her up and scares the h*** outta her.

I think the EGR on the LLY causes most of your turbo lag.

Elevation dramatically increases turbo lag, and decreases the power available off boost. I loved the throttle response when I took my D-max to the east coast. Here at 5,000 feet the wait for boost is noticible, but not too bad, but pull off at an overlook on an upgrade at 11,000 feet with the 5th wheel and you'll wonder if it's ever going to move when you try to pull out.

Power brake it and it'll spin them in 4 hi when you let off the brake, even in Colorado . . . I've seen it done . . . . with a dually.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif (Mine didn't have 4 wheel drive, dual rear wheels or an automatic, so it wasn't me, Officer.)http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Thank you all for your answers. I notice that those of you that were at lower altitudes seemed not to have a problem. I guess the altitude will affect performance before the turbo can spool up. But I am only @ 5,000 feet and this thing really hesitates. I guess I would like to hear from other owners located at elevation.

Thanks

Dave

Have you checked the normal things like the Fuel filter? Can cause it too be doggy, also the air filter. My 04 when stock (only the first 600 miles) would spin the tires fairly easily. I was at 5200 when I bought it.
