: Suspension Clunk?

Ive checked basically everyhting under there for play, cant figure it out.

It happens when you hit sharp bumps. Bumps that make the suspension fall on the truck. Almost like the suspension is hyper extending.

At first I thought it would be bushings somewhere that wear smoked out and creating play in the parts somewhere and when you make the truck bounce it would work that play and make it clunk but I found nothing.

It happens all the time too whether your turning or not. It was definetly alot worse in the winter.

Any ideas?

Mine has the infamous clunk also. I'm sure it's the intermediate steering shaft. Dealer to fix on 'recall' soon.

SOmething to check, simple, but could be a chance its this... On mine I kept hearing a loud rattle, or clunk on the front drivers side... I started looking around and found it was the nerf bars.... Aftermarket nerf bars on these trucks suck.... Well right where the front mount of the bar is on mine there is a little screw for a ground with some wires attached and found out the bracket from the nerf bar would bounce against that little screw... I just put a small piece of rubber between them.....

Thanks for the ideas.

I'm not sure if it's the steering shaft or not. I'll check into it. But I got doubts because you dont feel anything in the steering wheel and the truck still drives like a dream.

I'll check the nerf bars too, but its definetly a clunk, not really a rattle.

Sound like your UCA's hitting the stops when the supspension drops out.

I'd probably see some fresh metal or marks where its hitting eh? That sounds like it could be it. I'll check it in the daylight tomorrow to see if there is anything.

Mine does the same but it sounds towards the rear.I thought it may be the parking brake cable or the spare tire.

It is the steering shaft.

If you have a decent dealership in your area, you should go ask them if they will goodwill the repair....fix it for free.

There are a couple of options....
-Stroke the steering shaft....unbolt the I shaft under hood and stroke it 4-5 times. This should reduce the clunk if its the problem. It will come back however....just moves the grease around. You can do this to verify the fault.
-Lube the shaft. Take it out and pack it full of grease....take the clip out of the bottom, pump in some grease, plug the end, and compress the shaft.
-Replace the shaft. There is a new I shaft out that looks to have a nylon bushing in it...no more grease. Its about $70.

If the nsounds comming from the rear it could be the little plastic pcs that fit in the leaf spring. they keep the #1 and #2 spring from clanging, hd mine replaced and it went away. the problem is in time the break off...

exactly, my 03 did that and I about went insane trying to figure it out- reinstalled the rubber gizmos between the springs and it went away
