I am heading out on a trip to a race with the the Duramax towing the race car trailer. With all of the thefts I was looking for a easy way of disabling the truck so that it can't be started. I have heard that even without the factory chipped key that thieve's can still get it running. So i disconnected the #1 40 amp ignition fuse under the hood and tried to start it. It wouldn't start but on reinstillation of the fuse, it set a code. Any way of erasing the code with out taking it to the dealer? :badidea:

a few ignition cycles might do it or efilive or some other tuner. Try cycling the ignition a few times, it should probably reset itself.

I don't think the key is "chipped" either.

So the key you can buy at Lowes will run the truck indefinately? I bought one for a hidden key and it started the truck but I wasn't sure if it would die on me? It is a 2003 gasser I bought this for.

I havent got one made for my 2004 yet.

the key is purely mechanical.

Yep. I make hundreds of keys a year in my hardware store. No security chip on the Chevy pickups.

68Nova--- I know how you feel with the fuse issue and the code. I took a fuse out of the panel at the end of the dash today while looking for a fuse to hook my CB radio to. It was a ignition fuse and I decided not to use it and put it back in. My truck did start but it thru a code. I had to go to town anyway so went by dealer`s and diesel tech cleared it and also did a few checks while he was at it. I tried to clear the code with my Predator but I couldn`t get it done.

AKDoug--- Do you have a good view of the big mountain from where you are at ?? We hope to be coming thru there some time in July.

I disconnected both batteries for about 5 minutes, reconnected them and the lite stayed on until I put the vehicle in gear. The lite went out when I put it in gear. I drove it for a couple of miles and the lite never came back on. I know from talking to people that if the lite is not on, there is no codes.

I accidently ran the batteries down to the point where the remote wouldn't unlock the doors (left a 12 volt refrigerator plugged in overnight and the next day - tired from long trip & just forgot).

Went to get charger to recharge battery and called dealer about it. As part of our conversation, they said the keys are not chipped.

BTW: This reset the oil change interval on the DIC and it started over at 100%. Everything else stayed in memory, even the presets on the radio and all other DIC info remained the same.

Does this also happen if you disconnect the batteries for some reason?

you have a hall effect switch in the ignition and when turned it has to match the bcm electrical signal which if matched permits the engine controller to start the engine. sealing is almost impossible without the correct key to roll over the ignition. there is no chip in the key it is all in the ingnition switch. only override i know of is efilive and then hacking the ignition wiring to start the vehicle. most thefts are done by vin and matching the key through dealers i would think.
