: What tires can I get away with??

I know you guys are probably sick of this question. I have a 2004 4 door short box 2500 hd durasmack. I put the aftermarket porkchops in and cranked up the torsion bars. Also added a 1" block in the rear to level it out. What size tire can I get away with on the stock rim? and what size tire can I get away with if I buy H2 wheels. I have a bunch of guys with the 285's and I know of one guy that runs 315's on stock rims. Any experience with this would be appreicated. Also, has anyone used the new Cooper discoverer ATRs? I put them on my tahoe and they seem pretty nice. Anyone have pics of 315s on there truck with similar stance???

Thanks for any help. I have been dragging my feet on this for a year and want to get some new shoes. The 245s look pathetic with the truck lifted up.

285 are easy, 315's are a maybe but please bear in mind that if you go
in for Ally tranny warranty work with oversized tires, they will void
the warrenty. If you regear so that tranny sees same relative
load they "should" honor it though.

Thanks guys.

Ben,

I am assuming the 2" blocks are in the rear and you just have the keys turned all of the way up in the front?? Did you change your shocks??

thanks

and it looks awesome!!!

You are correct. And yes I did change my shocks before my other mods, so they were factory replacements. I added washers in the front for spacers and in the rear I built some extensions and have worked very well.

Some guys are running 285's, some 295's and some are running the 315/70-16 on stock rims... Others will purchase new rims and run those, just depends on what look you are after... There are alot of choices...

Guys, let me throw this out there. Aren't the standard wheels on the 2500 a 7" wheel? If that is the case then I would strongly say that you should not run 315's. BFG Goodrich recommends a MINIMUM 8" wheel for the 315/75/16 and a 8.5" wheel for the 315/70/17. I have an 04 Dodge, and Dodge buts 8x17" wheels on my truck. BFG 315/70/17 fit on a stock truck. However, the 8" wheel is just .5" shy of the 8.5" recommendation that BF Goodrich lists. Because of that I had one Discount Tire refuse to install them on my wheels. I did eventually find a store that would put them on. So, my point is that if I got that much grief over .5", I would think 1" difference in the standard wheel and the recommended size for BFG 315 would be significant.

If you do put 315's on 7" wheels, you will find that your tires will bulge in the centers, and most likely wear prematurely. If you decide to go past 285's, I would suggest upgrading your wheels to 8"

Just using BFG AT/KO as a reference, according to BFG, using a 7" wheel, you can put on 265 - 275 and safely meet the minumum wheel requirement. BFG actually recommends a 7.5" minimum wheel for 285 & 295 tires. 305 and up you will need at least 8".

I have personally seen 305's on stock alloy wheels, they looked killer. They were wearing perfect. If I had only known, I would have used 305's rather than 285's

Thanks everyone. I am still going back and forth on the whole deal. I understand the safety factor, but like many of you I know all kinds of people that put at least 285s on the stock 6.5 rim and they have not had one problem. As far as wear goes, with 425 hp I am not very concerned about longevity. I already about wore out the stock set at 20,000 miles. Waranty is a concern, but I can always find a stock set to put on if I have to take it in. I should say when I have to take it in. I am going in at 9:00 this morning to get my third new radio! Nice. I really like the look of the stock rims and I was hoping to see of pic of someones rig that just made me go off. I would like to see one with the H2 wheels. My wife says I have decision anxiety and I am worse than a women. Confused. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

Again thanks and if I ever make up my mind, I will post a pick. I have already ordered the new 05 "puffed up" hood and grill. Like that hood!!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif

What is a porkchop, and how do you crank up the torsion bars.??? My truck came with 245's on it, I would like something bigger.

Pappajo,

The porkchop is the key that holds the torsion bar in place at the mid point of the vehicle. They look like a pork chop. You can replace the stock ones with custom keys that have the hex hole offset so that when you crank the torsion bars up you can go further. To do that all you do is take a 18mm socket and crank clockwise to go up counter to go down. Drive the truck around to let is settle in and measure both sides to make it level. Once you go so far, you need to get different (longer) shocks. I cranked mine way up and added a 1" block in the rear. I got my keys and blocks at http://www.victoriaperformance.com/ (http://www.victoriaperformance.com/)

I am running 325-60-18 Nitto Terra Grapplers on my 2wd cc sb dur/allison with the torsion bars turned up about three turns on one side and four on the other. No driveability problems so far with about 5k on setup.

I like my 255/85/16 Dunlop Mud Terrains. They are factory rated for the 6.5" wide wheel. They cost $100 at tirerack and if I actually rotate this set more often they should make 35k. Check out the pictures in my signature.

Here's mine.

Tires aren't overly large, but looks and rides great and NO clearance
issues at OEM ride height except for minute trimming of the lower front
air dam.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/LloydTX/2004-10-05_133758_DSC00826s.jpg

One more - from the side. Poor contrast of tires to dark fender wells though.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/LloydTX/2004-10-05_133959_DSC00828s.jpg

I got my keys and blocks at http://www.victoriaperformance.com/Pappajo, Do you have to replace the prok chops in order to raise the ride height, or can you simply climb under and tighten the bars with the stock pork chops? Also, would this cause you to re-allign the front end?
