Does anyone know if 700r4 from gasser 4x4 is the same as one bolted to 6.2 diesel suburban both are 1987?????????

They are pretty much the same except different torque converters and possibly different valve bodies.

I just put one in today because tranny on the diesel failed .wiped out the converter and front pump ,I used the converter and tranny from a gasser was told the only difference was 3 bolts or 4 bolts on converter, I didn't get it full of fluid yet so it hasn't been run. what can I expect?

It probably wont last very long.

it will work fine, i ran a gasser 700r4 behind mine for over 6 months with no problems (now i have a 5-speed :D ), it revs the motor a little higher before it shifts as controlled by the govenor, and winds the motor when you take off because of the higher stall torque converter, but other than that, it will hold up fine and last as long as it would behind a gasser.

It will work fine. If you want to do it up right, buy a 1300 RPM stall torque converter and get a diesel governor to put in it. If you can't find a diesel gov. one out of a 2.8 (if think thats the one) s-10 automatic will work o.k. And you may have to get the right speedometer gear if your rear-end gears are different from the gas donor.

Swap the valvebody and the governor from your diesel tranny into the gasser. Make sure all the wires inside the tranny are changed to match the diesel configuration so the converter lockup works right.

Well I got it buttoned up tonite. It road tested fine but the engine does rev higher and I don't feel the converter locking up. I guess my fuel mileage will suffer because of no lockup, but will the converter last?

no, the converter needs to lock up (especially in 4th) other wise the tranny will build alot of heat and in return wont last very long

If you swap the governor, your shifts will be correct. The switches on the valve body and the wiring are specific to the diesel. Torque converter lockup can be accomplished in other ways, but it is easier to use the stock configureation.

Some of the 700 lock up controls are hydraulic and some are computer. I think most diesels were hydraulic and you cannot use the electronic valve body without big problems. Switch valve body and governor tobe safe.

Having run (and worked on ) a couple of gas 700R4s behind my 6.2 I can tell you that if you set the governor up correctly you will barely be able to tell the difference between the transmissions.

The main difference between the gas and diesel 700R4s was the governor. The diesel governor is set to shift a bit lower. A governor from a gasser can actually be adjusted to work in a diesel application but you will need new springs and weights.

The torque converter is different but you won't actually notice it that much if the governor is right.

The valve body is virtually the same... The location and number of the torque converter lockup switches is the main difference. Any other differences are fairly minor.

will a th400 bolt up in place of this 700r4 trans ,it didn't last to long no lockup and bad hesitation between 3rd and 4th then no 3rd and 4th.the 400 is bolted to a 6.2 in a 86 or 7 4x4 burb. just don't want to do it a 4th time

Yes, the TH400 will bolt in in place of a 700R4, but you will need to change a few things. You will need to remove the vacuum regulator valve from the injection pump on the donor truck and install it on your truck. You might have to change the driveshaft, not sure about that though. I think they are similar in length but I'm not sure.
