I have about 14k on my motor and I'm due for an oil change tomorow. I take it to the dealer to have it done and figured i should check my oil levels just to know for myself where it sits about oil change time.
Well it has 4100 miles on the oil (dino) and has been getting crap mileage. When i checked the dipstick it's LOW. like 2 almost 3 notches below the full line.
I'm going to bring it up to the dealer tomorow unless you guys think it's normal.

I would bring it up, my dealer told me that I should see no oil consumption. So far so good.

That's not normal. I have 71,000 on my truck and it's never used any oil. I have 11,000 miles on this oil and it's still full.

On a new engine some oil burn is expected. This is in fact a diesel engine. I would not be concerned with the consumption you have described. My last 7.3 took almost 25000 miles to "seat in " As oil consumption went down, fuel economy went up. Discuss your concerns with your service manager.

Thank you all very much. Tomorow I will talk to them about it and just have it noted.
I'm not as worried as i was so thank you. I'm just going to get it noted and if i have problem before the next 3k oil change I will also mention it to them again.

It makes sense about the seating thing, I'm getting like 13.9 mpg so something is still working in there.

While I dont drive a dually, I'm sure you should be getting better than that.

My oil started "disappearing" around 7500mi. Have you checked your head gaskets? I had a small leak on the driver side head gasket. All they had to do is loosen it up and tighten it back down. They said it didn't seal right and it should just stop. I thought they were full of Censored but it eventually did.

I think i'll bring that up about the head gasket tomorow. I mean i have a great warranty so while it worries me it's not making me lose sleep but the gas mileage is making me nuts. LOL.
At one time i was getting 16+ MPG empty and towing i would get 11-12 mpg. The towing weirdly enough stayed the same average yet empty is crud.

Yeah, thats a big difference in MPG. I get better than that on level 2 with 35" tires.

From almost not on the stick how much oil did it take to put it back to full?

Ok guys, i took it in last night and dropped it off. This morning i got a call from the service guy I always deal with. I told him about the mileage and he said somethings wrong, we'll check it and call GM if all checks out.
I told him about the oil and he said some due use a lil oil due to low milages on diesels, but, not that much he thinks somethings going on with that too. He'll have it checked out and if nothing is found he'll change the oil ship it and put me on the oil program. I guess that's where i go back in 1k then 2k then 3k and they see how much it has used.
Either way i feel better i'm not crazy... LOL

yeah I dropped it off last night to get worked on today. It's amazing how they'll bend over backwards for ya if you let them do a service. LMAO.

Mine just used a little better than a quart in 2000 miles. Truck has 10000 miles on it. 1300 miles of that 2000 was towing. I think I smelled oil burning off the engine. Is there a common place these trucks leak oil?

Truck should not leak any where, it is a sealed system, pcv, no open vent. Mine will use 1/4 of a quart towing heavyin 2k miles, just empty not a drop. I did have a rear main leak but the was not a normal thing.

You guys check your oil??? To be honest i dont. Didnt pay $42k for a truck that i have to check the oil on all the time, besides that it holds a little over 2.5 gallons and i change it with full synthetic every 6k. The only time that i have ever pulled a stick on my truck was this morning and that was to check the condition of the trans. fluid. Mine got an LOF, Rotation and New trans. filter today. If you guys think you have alot of oil consumtion then you should here what GM says is normal for Caddy's. GM claims 1qrt per 1k consumtion is normal for the Northstar motors and this is why they hold 8qrt's.

I check my oil because I paid enough for the truck that I don't want it to break down. Its alot easier to check the oil than replace an engine imo.

If you check it on a hot motor after about 3 minutes on level ground, it should be at least 2 notches low--thats normal.

---UPDATE---
They called and said that they found a bulletin that states it's ok for the vehicle to use 1 quart per 2000 miles of oil. If in the next 3k miles it's low again we will start a oil consumption test. The tech didn't seem worried at all, and said to give it a little time.
As for the fuel mileage they had no clue; they updated it with the latest TSB's and told them to keep them updated. it has no TSB on fuel mileages they said.
My front brakes are 9/32 and rears are at 7/32 so I think maybe i need to adjust my trailer brakes a bit tighter...LOL. I just hope that's still ok and i wont need brakes that soon.
