: My Schaeffers oil analysis results
dmaxalliTech 09-27-2004, 05:18 PM Well, being a hard pusher of Schaeffer products as most of you know, I pushed my last LOF harder/longer then I normally would to test the product. Note that this was my fourth dump with Schaeffers, running an early Amsoil oily cushion air filter, stock filter setup with a/c delco filter and approx 36000 on the truck at time of start, dumped it with 46k on it. Total miles of right near 13k.

dmaxalliTech 09-27-2004, 06:04 PM its engine oil.. not comparing it against anything, just the brand. I am looking for those that know more about them numbers to chime in...
Just seeing how good of an oil the 7000 supreme is or isnt.
RonJT 09-27-2004, 06:29 PM Eric,
Did you get a TBN number?
Do you have an EGR?(probably not)
Do you know what TBN should virgin 700 have?
Does the Iron seem a bit high?
I will be running 700 and comparing it to Amsoil--but the second oil change with 700 should be more accurate.
Idle_Chatter 09-27-2004, 06:45 PM Well, I think the trend in your numbers might be as important as your numbers, Eric. I'm afraid that you have significantly higher wear numbers than I've shown up through 83,000 miles ( getting ready to send in my 90,000 mile sample this weekend). For example, my last numbers were Copper-8, Iron-8, Lead-7, Aluminum-2. Your silicon looks good (my last one was 6). The Schaeffer additive pack is really different from the Rotella 5W40 on my last sample - I expected high Moly, your 165 to my 9, phosphorus and zinc are pretty close, but your calcium is monstrously higher at 5471 to my 1409!
Additive Package still good huh- that many miles and the beating you gave it looks like it pretty good oil. You said stock filter setup you mean oil I presume. Dam Amsoil air filter works pretty good for being junk huh http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

Dunno what a TBN is, so dont know info on it. didnt see anything mentioning TBN listed
no EGR.
I went a ways on this change, lots of towing, heavy hitting with some big boxes and lots of smoke..
I will change it again at less interval and sample again to look for trends as Tom mentioned.
salesrep 09-27-2004, 08:52 PM Virgin tbn is 12. The add pkg held up great . Calcium, phos, 165 moly cool. Low soot. The iron level is a bit high. I'll be interested to see the next report.

If you took a beatin like that oil did you would have high iron alsohttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

LanduytG 09-27-2004, 10:09 PM Iron, lead, aluminum are high but copper looks good compared to a lot of Duramax's I have seen. Also I have never seen chromium anything but 0. Looks to me that a little wear is going on especially if this is the forth round of the oil.

deadfurrow 09-28-2004, 12:48 AM Here are some of my numbers for comparison. Copper-3, Iron-8, Chromium-1, Aluminum-3, Lead-3, Silicon-10. And like Idle-Chatter said, most of your oil additive numbers are a lot different than mine.
Mobil Delvac 1300 15w-40, Baldwin oil filter, NAPA/Wix air filter. TBN was 9.3 with 8,076 miles on oil & 41,xxx miles on truck. I'm hoping to see my silicon numbers come down a little since I installed an AC Delco air filter that I purchased from, guess who.....Eric. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif

Delvac 1 w/6000 mi. of heavy towing. Fe 10,Cr 0, Pb 2, Cu 9, Al 3, Tin 2, Nickel & Silver 0, Si 5,Visc.@ 100 13.6 and TBN 10.3. This was in hot weather and as you can see by this sample there was no reason to change the oil. Your sample is showing some wear taking place.
salesrep 09-28-2004, 08:06 AM This is only one sample from one machine. this oil has almost twice the miles on it that it is being compared to. Wear metals are all within normal range. As a comparison

With Delvac 1 mine and your samples run right on top of one another. My silicon ppms run 10 with an AC filter installed although

I don't believe these are "normal" numbers for a Duramax... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif Much too high!
Here's my last Delvac-1 UOA from AVLUBE.

What was the viscosity of the Schaeffer's at 100°C?
Idle_Chatter 09-28-2004, 12:09 PM I agree on the high wear numbers - not at all "typical" for a DMax:

a bear 09-28-2004, 04:05 PM Eric those numbers are quite high. Sampling method or those extended miles may have been the culprit. Hopefully so. I would catch a second sample at your normal change interval to verify your results. Did you warm (stir up) the oil and allow about 1/2 to drain before taking your sample?
Just for comparison these are my numbers with Mobile Delvac 1300 after 7.5K miles and running a bypass filter.

mightyvh 09-28-2004, 04:19 PM For Dummy's like me there is a overview of oil analysis on Bob is the oil Guy site http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ see 'What is oil anaylsis" under general topics
I usually just look and smell (bad in both cases but my wife doesn't mind - I think)
Edited by: mightyvh
dmaxalliTech 09-28-2004, 11:50 PM I pushed my drain interval longer then I normally would, I will sample again at 7500 and see how it compares
Oil was hot, just drove to work, sampled half way though drain like common practice says.
Thanks for the input guys..
Frank Blum 10-03-2004, 05:33 PM I sure would be worrying about your Molybdenum at 38 a bear. I think your rings are worn out. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif Later! Frank Edited by: Frank Blum

Thanks geno, I just called my dealership and put a stop to the overhaul. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
Frank, Please PM me your address when you have time. My dealership needs an address to send the bill. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
