I read a post on the DMax forum that powder coated metal will increase oil temperature. So if you're doing heavy towing you should be looking for an aluminum cover.

Question: I think every good quality aftermarket pan I've seen is both aluminum and powder coated.

What gives?

$180 for a deep pan. Mine won't stop leaking. The thicker pan would seal better.

I ordered one "as cast" total $199 USD. I noticed it came with new hardware. A plus for me.

What is more effective in terms of adding reliability and longevity to the 4L80e transmission?? A deeper pan with more capacity or a larger cooler? I can see how a deeper pan could extend drain intervals, but not so sure on any cooling enhancements.

I've had my eye on that deep pan and may go forward with one when I make my mind up on a shift kit.

I got it to cure my leaking issue and for the extra capacity. I will add an auxillary tranny cooler also.

It has a cast boss for a temp probe.Edited by: quantum mechanic

The cast pans are nice. Too bad they don't make a high-capacity finned aluminum oil pan for the 6.5TD.

ST actually it adds another 3.75qt I'm running the "as cast" PML pan on mine it is a little finned the ribs according to PML help dissipate heat, if you want to run even cooler with more oil cap I also run a 25k rated Deraile aux cooler with a electric fan under the bed mounted on the frame cross beam. Summit has them for around $130 or so.

Unless towing my pan sump temp is rarely over 160 with fan turned off, I have a thermostat set on the remote cooler fan for 170, only see the fan on when hauling butt on a hot day, towing heavy, or low speed crawl thru the woods and little to no flow across radiator and factory coolers.

My tranny builder says anything you can do to pull away heat is good, and firmer shift pressure to reduce clutch pack slip, I had him install HD clutch paks and a B&M shift body in mine, at times with Bill Heath's reflash & right conditions a bit too aggressive. Also for longevity my builder recommends regular tranny fluid with annual filter changes if you work it at all, says you can go longer but if you really want it to last change annually.Edited by: Turbine Doc

TD,

How close does the pan come to the crossover pipe?

There are 2 pans, 1 hits it according to PML and the other clears it just fine, I think this is the same pan the Hummer uses. Had to resize and post 2nd pic below was too big, approx 2" between front of pan and X over manifold tube

Good shot, TD.

Is the header wrap worth it?

I'm not saying (classified performance info); you weren't supposed to see thathttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif possibly I think it does so it must rite ???

I wasn't smart enough to do before & after test nor did I have access to a dyno to say one way or tuther.

I'd really like someday to find a sympathetic dyno locally willing to let me have the dyno for a day rate, instead of $85/hr so I could tune and detune to debunk myth & mysterys of what does what for more power, I wrapped mine same time I installed it, it was ceramic coated to begin with so did I help by wrapping eh who knows.Edited by: Turbine Doc

No comparrison, the PML pan is solid and hefty for cast alum.
