I am currently on an extended trip, and yesterday every time we had to stop a strong exhaust smell came from the vents. While moving it wasn't noticeable, but as soon as we stopped again the smell returned. Checked as much as I could without dismanteling the whole system. Has anyone experienced this problem and what was the cause? Non or very little smell with HVAC on recirculate. Thanks in advance

Possibly a cracked down pipe at a mounting bracket.

Here is a bit of info.
My thought also. I would look for a leak in the engine area. Good luck.

Appreicate the replies, Have checked as much of the exhaust system as I can without dismanteling. Pulled the shield over nthe turbo and all is clean. The bracket on the down pipe is broken as Max Power suggested, but not leaking. The pass comp filter was changed 6 months ago. This is definately eye burning exhaust. Still looking.

Max Power...I went to the link you posted, and saw the cracked downpipe. I took a look at my '03, and it does not seem to have the bracked shown in the photos. Did they change the downpipe design for '03?

Sorry I don't know. I would hope they repaired the design. I have no first hand experience. Hopefully Eric or someone else more qualified then I will confirm.

With my HVAC set to recirculate, I get no exhaust smell in the cab, however if I set it to fresh air, at a stop I have smelled fumes in the cab. This is really noticable when backing out of my driveway. I also smell the exhaust sometimes when sitting at a light due to a breeze or the movement of other cars to fan it up front so to speak. I just considered it normal....
Now when I have to breath the nasty exhaust from a poor running old gasser in front of me....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Throw Up.gif
