: difference with exhaust materials?

Orignally I was leaning towards a Banks exhaust system but due to price, I think an MBRP is the way to go. My question is and I didn't see much on it is what is the difference with all the different material exhausts MBRP has? They have a couple different stainless kits, aluminized, etc...I dont really care if its shiny and the bling factor, but I dont want one that will rust quickly, considering the truck is in the winter from October/November until March/April. What do you think?

T-304
T-409
Aluminized

Assuming T-304 is highest quality stainless and stock exhaust is just aluminized? If thats the case, the aluminized may work just fine since I dont anticipate rusting out the exhaust on my truck any time soon...

The aluminized in my opinion is only good for areas that dont see much salt as I have heard it corrodes a lot worse than the factory materials.
The MBRP T-409 is pretty corrosion resistant and I think comes in a natural finish, and the MBRP T-304 system is highly polished and I think its a higher
grade of stainless than T-409.

Since you have added to your original post I will try this again.:D
I would use the T-409 if I were you, I dont think the aluminized will last very long in area's where you see salt or things of that nature several months out of the year. I agree with you on the bling bling factor as it just an exhaust pipe, but then again I would hate the look of my new 4" system coated in rust.-:t

I have heard that the Mbrp exhaust has a drone to it not shure if there any truth to it, I have Banks and have no coplaints.

Rather not have the drone to it. Like to be able to really hear it when I step on it and kinda just hum along when I'm cruising...From a bunch of the other posts, seems like MBRP wasn't bad in regards to a droan? Any other ideas on this?

Don't waste your money with the T-304! Mine has a slight drone (which I like), but with the radio at moderate volume you can't even hear it. Check out my last thread to see why 304 is a waste of money (IMO)...

T409, T304 -What’s The Difference?

MBRP's service and technical teams have been getting a fair number of calls and emails from people who purchased T409 XP Series exhaust systems. After about a year the customers are noticing what appears to be rust on their “stainless steel” system. They are understandably distressed.

For this reason, it is important to understand the difference between T304 and T409 stainless steel.

There is a reason that the Pro Series T304 systems cost more than the XP Series T409. The Pro really is a more durable, higher quality stainless steel. It all starts with what goes into the alloy that makes up the tubing.

What makes stainless steel “stainless” is the addition of chromium to the alloy. Chromium creates a film that serves as a buffer against corrosion, even when it is cut or scratched. The more chromium there is in the alloy the more resistant it is to oxidization or corrosion. The addition of nickel to the alloy enhances this resistance.

T-409 has a chromium content of between 10.50 – 11.75 percent and a nickel content of .50 percent. T-304 has a chromium content of between 18 – 20 percent and a nickel content of from 8 – 10 percent. In fact, there is so much chromium and nickel content in T-304, and so little ferrous material, that a magnet will not stick to it.

A Pro Series T-304 system will not rust or oxidize. It will develop a golden color over time when exposed to high heat. XP Series T-409 has enough ferrous material in it that it will show surface oxidization, especially when exposed to salt or calcium chloride. This oxidization can be buffed off with stainless steel cleanser and a scouring pad. Rust through will not occur until well past the warranty period even under the most severe conditions.

If the customer is concerned about esthetics and long term appearance issues then Pro Series T304 is the product of choice. If however, the concerns are limited to durability and price then XP Series T-409 will be most satisfactory.

SouthWest47, Thanks for your input, I read your post yesterday actually. I think I will most likely go with the 409 then since it saves a couple hundred bucks that I can use towards air intake or programmer...As long as it stay fully functional (no rust through) for approximately the same lifetime as a stock exhaust system, I will be happy with it...

The 304 IS a better material than the 409. T409 will start to develop some surface rust in time. The 304 will look great for the life of it, which is much longer than the truck its on will be around. T304 is not for everyone as it is pretty expensive. However, its the only answer for those in the northern region who dont want to have a rusty looking system under their truck. If you dont mind some surface rust, the T409 kit will work perfect.
