We have two duramax pickups. One 2500 and one 3500 both are '03's. The 2500 I drive myself and its been babied really. Very smooth very quiet.
The 3500 has been used for a truck. Its engine is very loud. Like lifters tapping or maybe pinging from the diesel? Just wondered if this is normal? The 3500 has 66k and the 2500 has 22k.
Any thoughts?

The 3500 has 15w40 delo the 2500 has amsoil. Neither use oil. Neither lack for power. Neither smoke at all except when you lug around then stomp it to pass someone.

Interesting topic... My 03 with 32 kmiles also seems louder than it did when it was new .. I've always had a little "fuel knock" between 1500 and 1800 RPM but it seems louder now - especially before the engine is warmed up. This knock varies with with load and fuel...there is a bit more knock at idle too. I bought a Predator recently so I could keep track of injector balance and all are running 2mm3 or less at warm idle. Judging from other posts and conversations with some Dmax owners, this "noise" seems common - not sure if it's good, but it does seem common. Other than that the truck runs great and doesn't use any oil. UOA's are also good with no fuel in the oil.

My how things have changed! Back in the ooooold days when all diesels were noisy, noone ever had "strange noise complaints". No they are so much quieter we notice every little ping. So many variables now to consider though: Pilot Injection turning on/off ...EGR valves opening/closing.... differences in fuel.....mod.'s added.....list goes on & on.

It honestly sounds like an older powerstroke. Maybe like the 2001 7.3's

My 3500 is a LOT louder than my 2500.It has gotten louder over the past 5000mi,it doesn't matter wheather it's under a load or not or what the engine temp is.The 3500 has Juice *** & the 2500 has a Predator everything else the same.Performance seems unchanged on both.

Performance enhanchers will affect timing and therefore noise. Some will do it even while set to 0.

isnt there a ticking noise when you start having injector problems? It seems kind of loud between 1000 and 2500 rpm. I dont think this it the pilot injector.

hi guys..i was having problems like ticking and it sounded like valve ..so i took it in and the found out that the dmax had three types of head gaskets and they f***ck up and installed the wrong one and carbon build up was hitting one valve..so they put the thick ones back on..i still don't know if it will work ..i'll pick my truck tomorrow and let you guys know..

Regarding noise... I tried some FPPF Injector Cleaner (8oz) in the last two tanks and maybe it's just my imagination but the engine is running much smoother and quieter - especially at idle. I also notice little or no fuel knock in the 1500 to 1800 rpm range.
