What a good article. If you need to buy a tuner, read before you buy.

A Good Test

While the high dyno numbers of the Edge did not transfer directly to realworld driveability, most of the other findings translated nearly as expected, on the track and over the road, except in those isolated areas indicated. Most important, there is very good reason why towing restrictions have been placed on the Edge and the Superchips programmers, so it is our recommendation that these limits be strictly adhered to. If heavy loads on the open road are part of your intended diesel use, weigh the information carefully, as only one of the three tuners is towing limit free, and that's the Hypertech. If simple straight-line performance is your goal, then that information is presented here as well for you to make choices. But even with the performance numbers presented in the charts, the driveability factors do differ between these units.
When you review all the charts, the power produced and the results of the tests, as well as the comments made by the drivers, there is a clear difference in the approach each manufacturer took to improving diesel power, and the resulting over-the-road performance. Analyze these results for what best fits your needs. If you tow only occasionally, or if you use your diesel to tow all the time, then the issues raised should be of concern to you. If it is sheer power that your are after, then a tuner will probably be only one part of the total aftermarket package you plan to include. If it simply comes down to inspiring confidence, with the pedal down and full steam ahead under all conditions, than this information should help guide you in that direction as well. Certainly any and all of this is important when considering a programmer. But what we learned as a result of this drive test, and all of the test results that were afforded us, is that there are a number of very good reasons why diesel programmers are so popular - they provide the most performance per dollar of any aftermarket bolt-on. That was a good article and the reason I went with Hypertech.

I don't race and dragstrip times are insignificant to me. I just need to move a backhoe, my trailers, or other equipment when necessary.

Eventually, I'll probably move to the Hyperpac as I continue to modify and upgrade.
