Does anybody know if a 4-speed transmission can be installed on a 1983 Jimmy (K/5 4WD cousin) that currently has a 700R4 auto trans in it w/ a 6.2L? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif Because this is an N/A (naturally aspirated) engine this would give me a little increase in H.P, right? I'm hoping that the cost of this kind of swap wouldn't be astronomical......or impractical....... Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For the expense and amount of work involved a turbo would give you the power you're after.

A standard trany is the way to go compared to those 700R4's. They are crap, along with every other P.O.S. automatic, especially behind a diesel engine. As for increased horse power-No, but more horse power to the rear wheels- Yes. The best way is to pick up a donor truck, with the clutch/brake brackets, pedels and master cylinder, or just the parts from an auto wreckers for cheap and put them in the same way. It might be a little time consuming but it is well worth it. You also might want to check your rear end gears since the four speeds usualy aren't overdriven. Example- 4.10 rear gears and a four speed (direct 4th gear) will have you running about 3000 rpm at 60MPH which is a little high for a diesel engine and fuel economy.
