I have a perfectly good running 6.5 in my 95 tahoe and I have a complete buildable 85 6.2. I want opinions and information about interchangeability of parts on these engine's i.e good castings to look for and head compatability. I read that the 6.2 heads have bigger valves which should help flow, but because the valves are big the space between them is too small and prone to cracks. I want to use the 6.2 block because the bore does not cut through the main webbing at the lower end causing a potential crack source. This is important to me because my engine build will be using at least 30 pounds of turbo boost. On ebay a complete engine rebuild kit can be had for about $850 including 18:1 compression pistons for either engine. All input will be greatly appreciated.

I think you have a good start. With 18:1 pistons you should be able to build more power in the 6.2L block. The 6.2L head doesn't have enough waterjacket to cool a 23:1 TD but with 18:1 the heat would be off, 30 psi with the right turbo and the bigger valves could be a plus.

An idea might be to pickup a van head/intake/exhaust and turbo. It's a much better set-up. Heads were ~$300, intake ~$150, exhaust ~$200, turbo ~$300

Need a van block too, has extra oil outlet/return in the valley to supply the turbo. Be very difficult to route the downpipe and air intake. I'd say go with whichever block is in better shape, or look for a 99+ one with upgraded splayed mains. 6.5 heads, althought the valves are a tiny bit smaller, forced induction will compensate easily for the difference.

I wanna see this custom intake manifold you got.Edited by: Texas Diesel Guy

Matt,

Perhaps TDG is right about a van block, as a 6.2L is best for a mechanical pump anyway.

Silly question time?

What are splayed mains? And is that how my 00 is?

My understanding is that all 99' and ups have them, its a feature to strengthen the crank journals, two bolts are parallel, and two are angled slightly to disperse load better.

Matt, I saw the kit. How much more is the penninsular kit? I also saw a shortblock for $290..............There's a dulie 6.5 up the road with a spun crank for sale.Edited by: quantum mechanic

If I can get my hands on a digital camera I'll send pictures of my intake. At this point I'm leaning toward rebuilding my 6.5 instead of the 6.2 Assuming it has no cracks. Since its a 95 I'm hoping it will not have the block cracking problem of the mid 96 to late 98 due to the piston spray channels. I don't want to run into any problems hooking up the turbo thats why I'm leaning away from the 6.2.

See the link below for a picture of splayed main caps, scroll down the page a bit to see a picture. They are NOT a production item, the block has to be machined to accept them on a rebuild. These guys did mine.
