: Smoking truck at idle.

Just curious with all you smart ones out there. I notice that my truck smokes alot at idle. The color is usually white. @ 2 months ago I took it in and asked the general if this was okay, they then tested it out and said it was my xcelerator programmer modification and injectors were okay. I do notice alot more and am now stacking that programmer on the max setting and also the hot juice on level 4 (120 hp without the attitude monitor).

On note I bought this rig with close to 70k and it had 3 injectors replaced prior to my purchase. I have not noticed any decrease in power and oil pressures are okay.

Any ideas would be welcomed.

White smoke indicates (I think) coolant. How is your coolant level?

My truck has smoked occasionally. Crummy tank of fuel, I thought.

P.S. Sorry, I'm not very smart.Edited by: Max Owner

Like max said, white smoke means your burning coolant in the engine...i dont know if its the same w/trucks, but i know on like snowmobiles, you can usually smell it burning, itwill smell real sweet....Also, again at least w/sleds burning coolant usually means youve blown a head gasket, or o ring or something...

I have smelled that smell before and it doesnt have a sweet smell. I will however check my fluid level. I thought that with the white smoke it may mean injectors. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Thanks

Could mean injectors, still. Does your oil smell like diesel?
Still lean towards coolant.

It's pretty easy to tell if the white smoke is coolant just by the smell. My bet is that you have bad injectors.

Even if three were replaced, the high failure rate of these injectors has caused GM to replace all injectors when any one of them fails. I had the exact same symptoms (white smoke on idle) and the exhaust had a very strong raw diesel smell. When it was checked by the GM Tech three injectors were found to be bad. All were replaced under the 200K mile warranty and I haven't had any problems since.

Good luck!

How do you tell if your oil smells like diesel? Just wondering. If I take her in to the shop again should I pull off the edge and the xcelerator?

Pull your dipstick and sniff. And DO take take off performance mods. Deny you ever had anything on the truck. Xcelerator is a gauge?

Performance mods will likely get your injector warranty voided.

Good luck, and let us know what you find.Edited by: Max Owner

If yu pull the dipstick and let it drip onto a paper towel oil will thin if diesel is in the oil.It will also smell like diesel.I can only speak of heavy duty diesel engines such as detroit diesel series 60's but if a truck is making oil it is injector problem. If you have white smoke and coolant has oil in it usually the injector cups are leaking.Which means coolant is getting into the combustion chamber, compressed, burning and going out the stack. This is my .02 and nothing else.

blnagel:

Does it only do it when it is warming up or does it do it all the time? Since you live in Montana, you might just be experiencing warm up steam... Just a thought! Mine does this too, only while warming up, once it is usually over 130F engine temp, it stops doing it and in the warmer months it does not do it at all. Maybe this helps...
