Hello. I have been having a rattle that sounds like it is on the interior side of the firewall. I can silence it by applying either a slight right or left turn pressure to the steering wheel. I also notice that the noise is effected by applying different pressures to the brake pedal.

I only notice the noise when either at idle or at a stop light. Sometimes it doesn't make the noise but mostly it happens. I have read about the intermediate shaft issues, but that describes more of a clunk rather than a rattle.

Any suggestions? It is making me go nuts.
Thanx

Sounds like the I-shaft to me. Do a search on Intermediate shafts. There are tons of threads.

It may be related to the exhaust system downpipe. See my reply #5 on this link. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92152

I don't think that is where the problem lies with mine. My noise is coming from inside the cab with no vibrations.

As for the transmission, the dealer is correct. Transmission is only covered to 36,000 miles. Only the engine has 100,000 mile warranty.

I have the same problem, but my down pipe comes off my second turbo and is no where near the firewall. Also I have serviced my Intermediate shaft and it got rid of one noise but not the noise at idle, when I'm off throttle going down hill or sitting at a red light, the noise seem to come from the plate that the peddles are mounted to, but some other vibration is causing it to rattle.

ZR1160 That is where my rattle seems to be coming from. It is going into the shop hopefully on Wednesday. hopefully they fix it and don't just put a bandaid on it that will only get me another 10k until my b2b expires. When yours makes the noise does it stop with a slight steering wheel diflection?

I'll try that tomorrow, usually I lift with my foot on the underside of the brake pedle when I idle.

I did something but I don't know how, last night I removed my firewall and hood insulation after having a small diesel leak, and not wanting to have my truck catch fire. I poped out the push pins that hold the hood liner on, but i had to rip out the firewall liner by hand........thing is the rattle from inside the cab is gone now! WTF:eek: in the end as long as its gone:D

Have you figured out what the rattle was? I took my truck in to the stealer today and I'm kind of pi$$ed at them. They just heard me say noise in the steering column and automaticly changed the intermediate shaft. They called and said it was done. I got in the truck and made it to the street and it was still rattleing. I grabbed the service guy and made hime go for a ride. He heard it and said "huh? never heard that before. It's usually the shaft". Why don't these guys take them for a drive. It seems like if they had they would have heard it an not called.

Sorry for the rant. Just frustrated:damnit1:

I assuming somethiing was touching the firewall from the engine side.

Yah but...if you have a bad intermediate steering shaft you will know it...you can feel the looseness in the wheel along with the rattle...:)

Got it back last night. Turns out that it was a brake line that was loose and able to touch the fire wall. I wasn't feeling any loosness in the steering coulmn but they assumed I was and replaced the shaft anyway. all seems good now.

Well sorry guy's. Last post was shot from the hip evidentely. Over the weekend I noticed some more noise coming from the steering column. This time it is the notorioius clunk the intermediate shaft is known for. Truck goes back in tomorrow. These guys at the dealers should take the time to listen to what the customers are telling them. instead they will make assumptions that they know. I think that part of the problem is that they don't have mechanics actually working as writers. you have someone up there who is supposed to be polished and up sell services to evreyone they come in contact with.
I am going to find another dealer for my warranty work. It is frustrating that this one is two miles away from my home. I didn't buy there because they pi$$ed me off in that process. But I would have liked to give them a shot thru service to buy my next one there. But not now.
