: Regen question

I am so close to ordering one of these things it isn't funny, but I have a question about the dpf regen before I do. I understand how the regen works, but I' curious how it will act if it needs to do a regen while I'm in a traffic backup. I don't have a lot of them going to work everyday, but when I go to the boat ramp, or leaving a race, i could be sitting in traffic for an hour or more. If it started the regen while i was driving, then I get stuck in traffic, what will happen? What happens if it starts while I'm idling along in traffic? What happens if I keep shutting the engine off and restarting it as the traffic moves, and it's trying to do regen. Will any of these cause it to go in to limp home mode? I know you all will tell me to buy an LBZ, and not worry about it, but I really like the new look. Thanks.....

I dont have the anwser, but I ordered the LMM and Im not worried about it either. Im sure GM has engineered this process to be fool proof and I understand from some previous posts and talking to me dealer about the regan, you never know its happening. The guys that are driving the trucks now have had no issues.

Regen only happens under these conditions, while driving at speeds of 30mph or more. You have to drive for at least 20 minutes nonstop. If you do stop regen mode stops, it will start automaticly and you just drive until the message tells you that the DPF is clean. Alot of people are scared of this but it's foolproof!

I've been in stop/go traffic and have let the truck idle all with no issues. Bajaman is right you have no idea the regen is even being done.

you should hardly ever see the clean exh filter message, but if you do a lot of in town driving or idling you may get the message. if this happens you just drive at speeds over 30mph until the light clears itself it doesnt have to be done right then but within a reasonable amount of time.

you have nothing to worry about. . .

-this is direct from gm service bulletins.

the regeneratoin process consists of several stages:
warming up the diesel oxidation catalyst to 662*F by performing the following:

Reducing air flow with the intake air valve
Increasing or decreasing boost pressure with the turbocharger, depending on engine load
Elevating the engine speed
Reduce fuel rail pressure
Retard fuel injection timing
Add late fuel injection pulses. the added fuel is not combusted but is oxidized by the DOC and exhaust particulate filter to create heat.
