I'd really like to have a tachometer for a 6.5 na engine that I'm putting in my truck. I've been calling around to no avail so far. Any suggestions as to where I can get one?

Thanks

you should go get one of those big tachs from jegs or summit. you know the ones with the shift light, and the numbers go all the way up to 10,000 rpms. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Rock On.gif

NAW You need to look in JC Whitney they sell aftermarket diesel tachs. You may have to take your Alternator apart to connect a wire inside. At least thats what I did to connect a tach to my old 6.2

I know JC Witney USED to sell them, I haven't seen them in catalogs for at least a year now.

I want one too because I have 4.10 gears in my axels NO overdrive transmission and live in an area where average speeds on the road get fairly high and don't want to run the engine at dangerously high RPM's because I really have no idea how high its spinning as it is.

Oh, about the 10,000 rpm tach.....................

One of my cars has an engine that is built to run to 9,200 rpm, and make power all the way to that point. Those are not totally useless to everyone.

I've got Isspro gauges (EGT and boost), and I like them very much. They seem to be of very good quality, and their design is very straight.

They have diesel tachs on http://www.issproinc.com/products.php?cat=148 --- but check out their website further. There seems to be even a special kit for the 6.2/6.5, see http://www.issproinc.com/products.php?cat=82.

Maybe ask John Kennedy, he sells the Isspros at a good price.

no, its a moderately modified B16A1 jdm vtec motor from Honda, but read back to steiner43511 answer to a request for diesel tach sources. It could easily be read into the context of just who needs a 10,000 rpm tach.

A diesel couldn't operate at those speeds due to slow flame front of the igniting diesel.

The answer was purely a non confrontational response to a slightly sarcastic answer someone made. Its very obvious a 10,000 rpm tach would be totally out of place in a diesel vehicle

LOL Yeapper And i was laughing the whole time I was reading it thinking of how far the pieces would be flying if you ever hit 10,000 with one of these. I would like to see the eyes when I talk about running my up to 3250 to shift, it does pull nicely all the way now that i got the lift pump fixed.

True........I don't know exactly what the redline is for these tings but I know its WAY, WAY less than that. I wouldn't want to be standing close to it when it went, but aren't the Injector pumps governed on these. You could probibly still push it too far to be safe. And definately if you downshif into to low a gear too quickly on a downgrade.

Bill Heath accidentally pushed a 6.2l twin-turbo in a race truck to 8500rpm, when it peeled the teeth off a Ford 9-inch ring gear.

And he had one of them 10,000rpm monsters, with light AND recorder.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Also, I rather enjoyed steiner's air guitar performance - wild stallions rule! ! ! !

But, this ain't contributing to the original post, so -

E-mail jcw.com, see if they can still get that Diesel tach.

Iirc, they have a request line.....Edited by: gmctd

It hit 8,500 AND didn't blow, or spin a bearing? I find that quite amazing. Must have had some sort of prep work done to it. Was it a stock engine?

He built it as a drag truck plant back in the early '90s - may be on his Heath Diesel website.

Has pictures of it, both front wheels showing clear air, big slicks wrinkled like a funny car - a late '70s swb GMC stepside.

He said it bent a few valves, but no other damage.

OK, thats a built motor..........most would grenade at far lower rpms.

> running my up to 3250 to shift

Hm, tranny MOTT shifts at 1800--2000, maybe 2200 when accelerating faster, and 2200 cruising, 2500 or so accelerating when towing in 3rd. I could probably get to 3250 and more, but I don't need to. More than 2500 doesn't make much sense with stock exhaust, though.

What do you do to get to 3250? Have low gears?

Cause I like the way it pulls, I have a 5 speed so I decide when to shift and it's not any ever time thing either, but with the 3" pipe it sounds so sweet.

mmmmmmmmmmmm sweet, I wish I had a 5 speed. I just have the damned rock solid reliable but non overdrive TH-400 with 4.10 gears and 33" tires.

Sounds good :) A manual tranny has its advantages.

Have there ever been Tahoes or Suburbans with it?

hum I wouldn't know never seen one myself but you can always put one in there if you want one.

Hm, going to a manual tranny would be an option to consider in case my auto fails --- letting aside that these trannys are not to come by here. What would be needed for that, how much work involved?
