In one of the Tech books from GM I have it says to torque them to 20 ft/lbs in sequence and then to 50 ft/lbs in sequence and then a ¼ turn in sequence. It is a rogh drawing but you'll get the idea.

14 10 6 2 3 7 11 15

17 9 1 8 16

13 5 4 12

Josh,

Are you planning on a rebuild? 18:1 piston kit is $850 USD. with a turbo and intercooler you'd be 350-400 HP and 500+ TQ

after the second torque sequence to 50 ftlbs. you should go around the sequence again at 50 ftlbs to make sure they are all still at 50. as you get to the last ones they first ones will need a little more to bring them all to right at 50. and they also suggest 90 deg(1/4 turn) to 100deg. i have also heard good things about the ARP head studs helping out ith these troubled heads.

OK, thanks guys

So torque them to 50 ftpounds, then go around and make sure their still at 50 ftpounds. Then do I take them another 90 Deg.???http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Quantum Mechanic--I'am leaving the bottom end stock. Its a Goodwrench crate motor, with unknown miles. It sounds really good, and runs even better. The problem is, I think it has a blown head gasket because when its running the cooling system immediately gets pressurized, and after awhile it needs water. Worst case, I will have to get a head fixed.

The truck has a J in the 8th position of the vin#. So I think that means it had the J code motor. Hopefully they replaced it with the same code crate motor.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

With a stock bottom end, and the Banks sidewinder turbo, what HP & TQ numbers can I expect. I hear the cranks are notorious for breakage.??

Thanks---Josh

Make sure to torque to 20ft/lbs then 50ft/lbs, so you don't warp heads or strech bolts too much at one time, re-check for 50ft/lbs and then a 1/4 turn each. Each step in the torque pattern.

ARP's head bolts are the way to go, they are supposed to have a higher tensile strength then stock. (NEVER re-use old 6.2L head bolts)And also use a thread locking compound such as Red Loc-Tight

As for the VIN, I'm pretty sure that the 3rd character is the engine code.(at least it is on my 1972 GMC)

According to Banks, stock HP for the 6.2L diesel is 148HP @ 3600RPM and with their Sidewinder Turbo System installed it is 218HP @ 3600RPM so you get a 70HP gain for about $2000. For that price you could buy propane injection (80HP) from Bully Dog ($700) and 4 tube headers (20+HP) from Stan's Headers($500) and still have $800 left over with more HP gain. But thats only my opinion.Edited by: project 6.2L
