The results from SPICER’s AIR FILTER STUDY (http://dieselplace.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10642&PN=1&TPN=1) have been compiled and formatted into the following html file. The report includes Bar Graphs, Plots and Data Tables
ISO 5011 Duramax Air Filter Test Report ( http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm)
(takes a few minutes to completely load with a dialup connection)

Very nice.

Some members might want to notice the one where UNI sucks the most dirt. :)

Excellent job on the report Bill! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif Will be a handy reference and I can even delete the rough notes I had captured from the original thread.

Thanks!

It appears that the WIX and both K&N efficiency tests got interrupted after 4 minutes. Did the machine stop? Should the time be increased for these 3 tests? It would have taken 22.306 minutes to feed 218.6 grams @ 9.8 grams/minute.

Those after high performance may want a retest with the test stopping at 100 grams of dirt. The flow restriction on the gauze filters looks impressive before 100 grams and they may be more efficient up to that point.

Again excellent, I went with the AMSOIL because they claimed to be the best protection, I now have the AC Delco. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Good catch! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

The tabular data does indicate that the K&N and WIX tests were initially stopped then restarted at the beginning. I wasn't sure exactly how to interpret this so I chose to plot the bar graphs from the beginning of the retest point. The flow restriction plots do contain all the points and, as you pointed out, all the accumulated dirt is accounted for.

Interesting question regarding the exponential flow restriction and efficiency ...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif It's also possible efficiency is less when the flow is greatest (pass more dirt ???). As the flow plots show, the filter's restriction starts out low then increases exponentially as they load with dust. Conventional wisdom also says a filter works better with use. Since the accumulated dirt was only measured at the end of the test we don't really don't know the relative efficiency versus time (and dust input). It would be an interesting test!

Not much more can be said about this that hasn't already be said. Great Job, and thanks for posting it like you did. I bookmarked it and sent it off to a few friends to read.

I may be misunderstanding what you are making reference to, but I think that Ken told me that a couple of filters were stopped early then re-started in order to measure "initial efficiency". As Bill mentioned, efficiency of a filter is not constant but changes as the filter loads with dirt. The efficiency numbers reported for each filter are the Final/Average efficiency for that filter over the entire duration of the test. On a couple of filters Ken stopped the test to measure initial efficiency, then re-started and completed the test. This is NOT an uncommon method of testing. In fact it is very common, but he did not do it on ALL filters simply due to time. Theoretically you could stop the test every few minutes and measure the efficiency. This would give you a very clear picture of how the efficiency changes as the filter loads with dirt.

Nobody is more thankful than I am for Bill's hard work here. It puts hundreds of hours and tons of data into a very readable, conclusive format for all to benefit from. I could not have done this study without everyone's input and Bill is obviously no exception. Thanks a million to all! SPICER

Awesome material......I read the data three times just so my feeble little mine could make a sound decision.I kept my oem filter which was changed for a kn filter at 3000 miles on truck I just changed it back to my oem at 13,500 and will replace with ac delco filter at next change......One thing about it HARD CORE DATA DOESN'T LIE.Thanks for gettting the information out to us....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Hug.gif
