: Price of diesel fuel
dandy 09-22-2004, 09:17 PM What is going on with the price of diesel fuel? I purchaced my new 04 LLY in early July. Diesel fuel was $1.76 as of today fuel in my home town is $2.05. The lower fuel price is one of the reason I purchaced a diesel. Does anyone have any idea if prices will stay this high? I never remember seeing diesel this much higher than gas.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
Max Power 09-22-2004, 09:25 PM As soon as I sell my diesel and buy a gas. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif
SUMMITMAXLLY 09-23-2004, 01:30 AM Diesel prices will flucuate like gas. Keep in mind of the external factors that may affect the diesel price: disruption of oil facilities by Hurricane Ivan et al; the middle east problems; high demand; change in season; etc. etc.
I too bought the D-Max when diesel fuel prices were lower than gas. A month later, the diesel fuel prices spike and went higher than the gas prices. So, it something to get use to.
In the Northeast, untaxed diesel and home heating oil are virtually interchangable. I have gotten heating oil deliveries and the ticket was marked as off-road #2 diesel.
Aside from the high price of crude itself, there is seasonal fluctuation as demand for #2 distillate goes up in winter. Also, due to the crazy changes in oil prices over the last few months, commodity market speculation is also playing a role.
I would venture to say its due to demand. If 100,000 new people run out and buy new diesel trucks that previously never owned one, what do you think is gonna happen to fuel prices. I personally have seen ALOT of new diesel trucks on the road lately. All the extra power you can have with better diesel fuel effiency is becoming very attractive to ALOT of gas engine owners. I don't see diesel ever coming back down in price. Not for awhile anyways. Just be happy you have a great truckhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif.
salesrep 09-23-2004, 08:30 AM I doubt that we will ever see it come down substanially again. My guess is that it will stay either side of $2 for a long time.
yitsock 09-23-2004, 11:23 AM My opinion is that diesel prices won't stay higher than gas for too long. There are quite a few truckers, and companies that back them that wouldn't like to see these high prices remain in effect! Hopefully it drops soon. I'm out in Mi. and the prices aren't too bad. Some places are still 2$/gal. But if you shop around I can get as cheap at 1.80 easily....
Mark_my_word 09-23-2004, 01:09 PM Not sure if it will go down, it may actually continue rising (of course, now that I've bought my first diesel). A couple of days ago I heard on the radio that one of the biggest factors in the price rise is the HUGE increase in demand from China. Apparently they are 'modernizing' and there is a huge demand for diesel to fuel that modernization. Not sure if I heard the figure right or not but it sounded like they said something like 20 or 30 percent of the world diesel supply is going to China.
emerick115 09-23-2004, 01:41 PM MINE WENT UP FROM 1.97 TO 2.07 IN ONE DAY.
salesrep 09-23-2004, 01:42 PM mark my word I think you are correct about China. Just wait till these masses start driving more.
mike04 09-23-2004, 02:21 PM Prices here in Va were 1.53 a gal when I purchased my truck in June and now they are 1.87 a galhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif Oh well I still like my duramax more than my 6.0.
NorCal 2500HD 09-23-2004, 04:21 PM heres somthing that you guys might like to check out since were on the topic of fuel prices........this is as of today.

oozamalak 09-23-2004, 04:30 PM As of the increase today fuel prices are $2.09. When I ordered my truck in June fuel prices were $1.70. Sorry for the fuel price increase, it must be my added fuel demand.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Tongue.gif

In any fast expanding economy where there is little energy infrastructure in place, diesel powered electric generation is the fastest way of gaining electrification.
Mark_my_word 09-24-2004, 10:16 AM Yes, the China drain is going directly into large scale diesel power generation. If you live in Southern California and think the air is smoggy here you can't even imagine how bad it is over there. Not exactly 'clean burning' plants.
oozamalak 09-24-2004, 12:27 PM $2.09 yesterday and $2.13 today. It is now a $0.05 more than regular unleaded.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
Mark_my_word 09-24-2004, 03:28 PM Cheapest diesel near me in Southern California was $2.05 a few days ago. Went to fill up today and it was $2.21. That station is still cheap compared to others. A lot of stations are charging over $2.35.
Lloyd-TX 09-24-2004, 04:37 PM 1.929 per here in Houston when I filled up this morning!
dandy 09-24-2004, 10:42 PM Got home tonight 2.09 in my home its making me sick. So much for buying a diesel.
westwindsdiesel 09-27-2004, 10:44 PM 2.00 in zeeland,mi. I don't know what to think.http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
marcdeluca 09-28-2004, 10:27 AM I bought my first diesel in July, after getting back from vacation to Maritime Canada and paying $2.50 for LP (gas was $3.00) and getting 6.9 mpg pulling my 5ver. Propane used to be cheap in Canada, less than half the cost of gas. No more. Even at home, LP has gone up $.20 to $1.09 since last year, and that is buying at least 3000 gal at a time. I had always done pretty good on LP, but if it costs more than half the price of diesel you are better off with diesel, because diesels do about double the mileage of a gasser on LP. World demand for all fuels is going up rapidly, largely because of China and India, just to name a few. I believe the days of cheap fuel are over. I read an article in National Geographic about China, and it is amazing how fast it is growing industrially and in all respects that consume oil. It also talked about how incredibly polluted it is getting there, they have no EPA to deal with. I guess I'll have to convert my Dmax to nuclear.
briano 09-28-2004, 10:59 AM this negates one of the main reasons I purchased this truck. the price was consistantly 30+ cents cheaper a gallon...now its higher than regular gasoline..WTF????Edited by: briano
dmacy 09-28-2004, 11:32 AM I think if you notice a lot of the high prices are in the states that have cold weather. Insted of refining for diesel they are refining for home heating oil thus driving the prices of diesel up. In less that a month the prices in Western Massachusetts have gone up 30 to 35 cents. It now is about $2.15 and climbing.
briano 09-28-2004, 01:34 PM when I bought this duramax, mind you I have only 2k miles on it... diesel was 1.59 a gallon and I was loving it. Drove by the same Shell station and its now 1.95...
LLDirtMax 09-29-2004, 11:48 AM 215.9 for # 2 here in the Sierra Foothill region of California....
NorCal 2500HD 09-29-2004, 12:05 PM 215.9 for # 2 here in the Sierra Foothill region of California....
thats the lowest I have seen it here in the bay area...
Searay90 09-30-2004, 02:29 PM here in Dallas TX, the price of diesel has gone up 22 cents in the past 10 days. Diesel is now 1.999 per gallon, and regular unleaded can be found everywhere for 1.799 per gallon. Something is rotten in denmarkhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

I paid 1.45-1.55 for diesel in Texas a couple of months ago! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif
I'm paying 2.11 in SoCal right now. Which is about the same as it was when I bought the truck.
If fuel prices continue to climb, biodiesel will become profitable enough for the big companies to develop. The gas guys? You can only add so much ethanol to gas before you destroy your motor.

Agreed.
I believe most of us cannot blame the service station owner. Most know they make pennies [literally] on the fuel/dollar.
When I asked an owner 'why the diesel price swing'?, he explained it to me this way:
He said, 'the powers that be were not making enough money with the diesel fuel, and they decided to increase profits by raising the price'....
That in a nutshell is basically what happened according to him. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
Motivational 10-01-2004, 12:16 AM Last week I paid $2.19. This week Monday $2.29. Today $2.49 and another station had it at $2.59???? WTF?????? I am in Long Beach,California. We aren't a cold state.
McRat 10-01-2004, 12:40 AM http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley11.gif I filled up last week, and I look at the same station today, and it's up 31 cents!

yep I've noticed the same thing, diesel is now the same price as premium unleaded http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif. Isn't diesel less "refiened" than unleaded, therfore should be cheaper http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif
As long as there is a demand for diesel, even with prices climbing, they'll keep rasing it until sales fall off. Then they'll back it down a few cents. And presto, you have your new stable diesel price. My guess is around $2.50. My wife found some interesting research on fuel consumption. On average all fuel usage increases by about 2% per year. This year alone, diesel usage increased 6%. You do the math, demand creates price hike. And now with the added fuel consumption from China. Look out fuel prices!
I also heard the trucking industry is in a world of hurt right now due to diesel prices. Guys can't make any money by the time they pay for their fuel. Somethings gotta give soon, I just don't know what. Only time will tell.Edited by: 338_
baimpala 10-02-2004, 04:15 PM There's more to it than just how much people buy or don't buy. Is there anyone but me who follows crude prices? That drives price at the pump WAY more than anything else. Crude goes up, pump goes up almost immediately, crude goes down, takes a week or so, then pump goes down.

Lloyd-Tx needs to sell me one of his 455HO's--he is hording them!
We need to find a reason to bomb China--that will slow them down!

LOL! Only one is driveable at this time. I'm VERY proud of it, see the attached pic!
Following up - I paid $1.959 per in Sugar Land yesterday.

mahalkita 10-05-2004, 11:52 AM There is something wrong here. Diesel is the second cheapest lowest
grade of fuel aside from Petromleum. The production is cheap comparable
to premium fuel.
I can understand that fuel is expensive because of demand and because
of high crude prices but that should never drive diesel fuel prices
higher than gas prices. Nowhere else on this planet is diesel more
costly than gas - only if the goverment (like Sweden) don't want any
diesel vehicle (because its dirty) increases that price via heavy
taxing.
China dos not use more diesel fuel, just more fuel in general...
briano 10-05-2004, 01:02 PM price has gone up again here in Central Texas...when I bought this truck 2 months ago price was 1.65 a gallon...
I checked today... $2.05...higher than Super Unleaded!!!! MY gawd!!
chuntag95 10-05-2004, 02:18 PM Well, there is a 26% tax on diesel vs. the 22% on gas. That still doesn't make up for the 1/2 as much to refine. How is China paying for all of this fuel? They don't just give it away, as we all know.
aka108 10-08-2004, 05:28 PM About two-thirds of the high fuel prices are caused by us. (ie, U.S). For years we have brought young folks in from all over the world and put them through our universities, shown them what we have and sent them home. Then we start buying from them (check out the container trains crossing the country), building their enconomic base, improving their standards of living and putting them all on the road and using more and more fuel that used to only have a large market here. We sort of dug our own hole and we are digging it deeper every day. We're doing it to ourselves. Supply and demand at work (plus a little profiteering).
04DMCC4X4 10-08-2004, 07:05 PM I live on the central coast of California, diesel prices are 233-235 a gallonhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif. I bought my truck for towing our toys around, diesel price and milage as well, not to mention the cool sound the turbo makes. I agree that it doesn't make sense for gas to cot less than diesel when it is refind less than dieselhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif. This site is awesomehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif.
